I’ve always liked to create things, whether it’s music, writing, assorted projects, etc., which (along with my discovered knack for math and science) led me to engineering. In my schooling I’ve found that I like just about all facets of mechanical engineering, and seeing the outcome of my work is always special. My curiosity and drive led me to a 4.0 GPA, and exists in every thing I do, from work to play. For my senior design project I worked in a team of four mechanical engineers with the aid of working in tandem with a team of electrical engineers to design and build an electric moped. Applying all I’ve learned, and learning more such as expanding my abilities with Ansys FEA software to do dynamic analysis on our frame, was a joy - and so was working with our multidisciplinary team. I was in charge of developing our braking system and collaborated in designing the drivetrain and overall body. All in all I explored a variety of topics (including aerodynamics, plastics engineering, biomechanics, vibrations, and more), and particularly love analysis and design. I’m always eager to learn more even in my daily life as well. This willingness to learn aided greatly in my work experience. I learned about industrial settings first working as an intern for 3M in Alexandria, MN where I used my knowledge and help from my mentor to do intermediate product testing and advised a process change to improve efficiency. I also planned a large scale equipment move and helped in developing a new on the floor material testing method. This all involved and was aided by communication with people from operators to management (who I presented to). I completed lot of smaller projects as well in my time with 3M. Wanting to explore engineering more but remain in my hometown, I took an internship designing custom automated packing machines with Aagard, where I still work today, now as a mechanical engineer. I have had responsibility to design machine units as part of a team, working with other mechanical engineers, as well as electrical and controls engineering. This entails heavy CAD use, maintaining a schedule, mechanical calculations, managing the release of parts and fabrication routing, design reviews and more. I also support machines throughout assembly and testing - designing practical solutions to issues that arise to optimize the machine and ensure deadlines are met.Working with Habitat for Humanity and being a tutor at NDSU along with these positions has also aided my ability to communicate complex ideas with a wide array of people.
