The overall aim of my PhD is to explore and analyse the nature of the nonviolent resistance movement of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan – popularly known as Bacha Khan – that initially waged a successful campaign against the colonial authority of British India but suffered insurmountable blows in its attempt to prevent partition of India. Bacha Khan’s movement was known as the Khudai Khidmatgar (KK) or servants of God, part of which morphed into a political party known as the Awami National Party (ANP) or People’s National Party, which has dominated politics in the Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan since the latter’s inception. The study will focus on the following three conjunctural units, which are all characterized by the presence of a strong adversary or oppressive power and their interplay with either the KK or ANP:1919 – 47: Creation of KK and resistance against the British Empire.1976 – 92: Invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Forces and armed resistance against the invasion by the Afghan Mujahideen, backed by the Pakistani military and Pakistani Jihadi syndicates, and their enmity with ANP.2007 – 14: Establishment of the Pakistani Taliban Movement (TTP) and its bloody campaign against ANP.
