Malaka Gharib is the author and artist of the graphic memoirs "I Was Their American Dream" (2019) and "It Won't Always Be Like This" (2022). She is the editor of Life Kit, an NPR podcast. She was previously the deputy editor of NPR's global health and global development blog, Goats and Soda. She writes about foreign aid, humanitarian crises and development and assists in editing the blog. She also manages the blog's digital outreach strategy and social media accounts. Previously, she led digital at the Malala Fund, where she managed Malala's advocacy and fundraising strategy. There, she organized digital events around Malala Day, education campaigns and Malala's documentary film, "HE NAMED ME MALALA." She comes from The ONE Campaign, a grassroots advocacy organization of more than 6 million people united against global poverty, where she managed ONE's social media platforms, lead digital content strategy, and edited the ONE Blog. Under her leadership, she brought 1 million followers to ONE's Facebook page, made the ONE Blog a high-traffic destination for global development news, and established a culture of testing, innovation and pop-friendly responsiveness to ONE's digital communications.Before ONE, Malaka was one of the first full-time social media copywriters in Washington at Virilion, a digital advertising agency, where she got her start writing punchy tweets and Facebook posts for a $20 million energy campaign. Previously, she was an interview producer at Al Jazeera English, putting together live discussions during the 2008 US presidential elections, the War on Gaza and the Mumbai attacks.Malaka graduated magma cum laude from Syracuse University with a double major in journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and marketing from the Whitman School of Management.From 2010 to 2015, Malaka ran an independent food magazine called The Runcible Spoon, which has been featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post.
