About Malcolm Beaumont

I am currently Working as a Consultant for Rimmer Engineering Ltd, based in Auckland. My role prior to this was as Front End Development Lead at Shell Taranaki, which I retired from when Shell sold their business in New Zealand to OMV. I have been working as a consultant since the beginning of 2019. This included a 5 month period supporting OMV at the Pohokura Asset, where the operating team was having problems with operation of the condensate stabiliser column. I have over 35 years experience in the oil and gas industry and have high technical skills in all aspects of process and front end concept engineering. Prior to returning to New Zealand I was the Technical Integration Manger for the Prelude floating LNG Project, a position I held for 3 years.I have lead or been involved in concept selection on many projects including H Block, offshore Nigeria, Goodwyn (Woodside), Malampaya, Camisea and Pohokura in New Zealand. I have particular strengths in gas processing, LNG and NGL recovery and have written and presented a number of technical papers, both within the Shell Group and externally (Gas Processors Association, NZ Petroleum and LPG Conferences, etc). Until my appointment to my current position in July 2011 I was Shell’s Principal Technical Expert for Gas Processing. I also have significant experience with plant operations and management.I have during my career taken responsibility for economic evaluation on a large project, including development of a complex economic model linked to sub surface and have liaised extensively with gas marketing on commercial and contractual issues, i.e. gas specifications, market requirements, capacity, load factor, etc. In 2002 I completed a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of New South Wales. This has given me the ability to understand sub surface technical issues and multidisciplinary dependencies when considering the hydrocarbon production chain from reservoir to market. I have a very good understanding of gas and LNG markets and recognise where constraints and opportunities are for maximising the value of gas assets.

I undertook a 5 month assignment with OMV, looking into the operation of the Pohokura Production Station, where there were problems caused by the condensate stabiliser, which was prematurely flooding. I worked remotely with local operational process engineers and managed to optimise performance, within the constraints of the stabiliser. I was also able to demonstrate that the recently installed Butane Wind Up Solution was working. This has now been proven post clean up of the stabiliser where on spec condensate can now be produced.

  • Shell Global Solutions International Bv
    Principal Process Engineer
Shell Global Solutions International Bv Mar 2004 - Dec 2007

During my time in Rijswijk I initially spent12 months as Surface Lead on the H Block Project in Nigeria. This is a large-scale combined oil and gas development located in shallow water offshore the Niger Delta. I successfully took the project through to DG 3. This was a complex development which tested my skills in a number of areas, including subsurface and surface integration, development planning and decision making. I was then seconded into EP’s Development Planning Group for a 14 month period where I was involved with gas supply studies in Nigeria to support a portfolio of new LNG growth projects.

This included responsibility for preparation of a Field Development Plan for the Pohokura Development. It involved ensuring that all work required to be completed to meet major project milestones was undertaken in a timely fashion and to a high standard and in line with the Shell Opportunity and Project Management Guidelines (OPMG). The VAR3 held in late July 2003, instigated to confirm concept selection, and based on preliminary sub surface modelling was completed successfully.I was responsible for:• Coordinating front end conceptual studies and managed the interface between sub surface and facilities in determining the optimum development concept • Development of a comprehensive economic/production model for comparing alternative concepts. • Liaison with Joint Venture gas and LPG marketing committees to ensure alignment, the establishment of project economic assumptions, the optimum method of LPG export and to ensure that availability/reliability of system design are compatible with gas marketing requirements.

This involved a thorough assessments of KGTP’s position within NGC, including analysis of the value added to the company by processing gas and extracting hydrocarbon liquids and carbon dioxide. A tolling model was developed as a basis for third party charges for access to the plant, and a combined production planning/financial model created to assess the plant performance and determine the net present value of the Kapuni assets. Prior to undertaking this role I was Engineering Manager at the Kapuni Gas Treatment Plant where I was responsible for managing plant engineering and technical support at the plant included overseeing the laboratory and environmental services. A major part of this role was the responsibility to ensure that the technical aspects and engineering of a major plant refurbishment ($30 million) were in line with NGC’s requirements. Also designed replacement of the old refrigeration and dehydration systems in the gas plant with propane refrigeration and IFPexol dehydration to enhance environmental performance, increase LPG recovery, and improve plant efficiency. I played a key role in the development of a $40 million cogeneration project at the KGTP. This included responsibility for definition of KGTP’s requirements for services (steam and power), negotiation with cogeneration JV Parties and integration of the 20 MW cogeneration facility into the plant.
