The Technology Commercialization office (Tech Comm) serves as a vehicle for university researchers to protect and commercialize new scientific discoveries. As a Tech Comm intern, I provide support to attorneys and licensing officers within the office by performing an initial assessment on newly submitted technologies:-I learn the scientific background behind the technology, providing both a broad summary as well as specific technical details and potential benefits over competitors.-I search for prior art, identifying any existing patents or scientific publications that may overlap with the new technology.-I perform market research, providing an estimated market size, presence of competitors, and potential drivers or challenges, as well as identifying putative licensing partners.-I have also assisted in designing web pages advertising these properties to licensees, communicating complicated scientific concepts for a more general audience.

I completed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry within the lab of Dr. Courtney Aldrich. As a Med Chem student, I received highly interdisciplinary training, with a primary focus on organic synthesis and further exploration into analytical instrumentation, microbiology, and chemical biology. My thesis project focused upon the development of novel applications of the antitubercular drug pyrazinamide, particularly through the synthesis and evaluation of prodrugs and analogues.I was awarded a T32 grant as part of the University's NIH Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Grant (CBITG) program in order to pursue investigation of the mechanisms behind beta-lactamase induction in mycobacteria in the lab of my co-mentor, Dr. Anthony Baughn (Microbiology). As a CBITG trainee, I also participated in service and outreach programs, including planning and fundraising for an annual research symposium featuring speakers from a variety of careers in chemical biology. As a member of the Aldrich group, I mentored a number of pupils in basic organic synthesis, including undergraduates, rotating students, and new lab members. I was also relied upon for service and maintenance of analytical instrumentation within the lab, including MPLC, HPLC, and single-quadrupole mass spectrometer systems, and I regularly train or assist other lab members in their use. Additionally, I participated in collaborations with academic labs from within the university or around the world, functioning as the chemistry expert on projects involving HIV and tuberculosis. These experiences honed my communication skills, requiring that I synthesize and convey challenging concepts for both new researchers and experts from a variety of scientific backgrounds.

As a member of the Fuchs Lab in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, I further developed my skills in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, assisting in a lead optimization campaign on a cytotoxic natural product. My efforts led to the identification of a novel analogue with nanomolar potency against several cancer lines, as well as co-authorship on a research manuscript (doi: 10.1016/j.bmc.2018.03.033).

After joining the Mattson Lab in the Department of Organic Chemistry, I performed guided research with a graduate student and developed basic bench skills in organic synthesis. My work involved synthesis of novel anticancer leads as an application of an organocatalytic reagent previously developed by the Mattson group.
