Current1.4 million children attend Ontario elementary schools every year. About 35--50% of this group are thought to have difficulties with learning mathematics. MathMeasure is a new and innovative educational service that provides evidence-based instructional design solutions in mathematics, delivered by trained tutors, to school-aged children in Grades 5 to 9 and their families. Our vision is to: (1) train tutors in evidence-based instructional design and assessment practices; (2) use individualized learning plans and mathematics proficiency assessments to inform instructional support for student learning; (3) deliver workshops for families who are interested in understanding recent provincial curriculum changes and who are interested in learning by doing mathematics in 2020; (4) actively seek children who need and want help but whose families may not be able to access out-of-school help; and (5) develop and test innovative instructional approaches by collaborating with external partners and freely distribute what we learn. In the long-term, MathMeasure strives to demonstrate evidence-based best practices in individualized and small group teaching and learning as a social enterprise.
