Stemming from my personal diagnosis with obsessive-compulsive disorder, I am both fascinated by and passionately committed to shedding light on the complex nature of anxiety disorders and mental health conditions. My ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illnesses. Though I have surface-level behavioral health experience from working directly with autistic children/studying their behavior, the professional path I plan to follow focuses more on laboratory research than behavioral care. In other words, caring for mental illness patients directly is a fulfilling and necessary profession, but rather I hope to get involved with laboratory research that conducts experiments on how mental illnesses affect the brain and manifest in patients' behaviors. I would hope to subsequently publish those findings in scientific papers written collaboratively with like-minded colleagues so that those results can the shape behavioral health treatments and therapeutic methods that will improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illness. My background in studying print journalism before settling on neuroscience/psychology has awarded me with writing skills that have been honed and refined through both my undergraduate coursework and experience as an undergraduate research assistant; I hope to continue to utilize and enhance that competency through collaborating with colleagues on scientific publications highlighting discoveries that could potentially lead to the development of more effective treatment methods. Filling more of a behind-the-scenes research role to unravel the intricate fabric of the neural correlates underlying anxiety disorders and publishing those findings to be applied by others in treatment methods is the bottom line of my professional aspirations, and I look forward to working alongside dedicated, lifelong learners who share that same passion.
