My name is Malek, and I am a student at Upper Canada College, Toronto. Growing up between two continents before my family settled on the third by the time I reached 8 was as diverse as it was fascinating. This multicultural upbringing has given me a unique perspective on the world, and gifted me with the opportunity and motivation to speak 5 languages, celebrate differences instead of fearing them and learn to value my own identity while respecting and embracing the identities of others.From a very young age, I was fascinated by the world of medicine, drawn to the complexity and intricacy of the human body, and the challenge of solving medical mysteries.In 2020 and while the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for students, it has provided me with a new opportunity to explore extracurricular subjects that I may not have had time for before, like medical studies. Harvard Medical School’s wonderful HMX programs were remarkably there to help me engage in meaningful pursuits, learn new skills, and delve deeper into subjects that I am passionate about. Until now, I’ve completed 9 extensive programs in Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Immuno-oncology, Genetic Testing and Sequencing Technologies, and Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology.In 2022, I have founded a Genomics Club at my school focusing on the applications of Genomics beyond the health sphere addressing the technical and ethical issues that they raise to offer substantial thought-provoking participation opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing careers in Law, Justice, Human Rights, Education, Law Enforcement or even Policymaking.Finally, I am very passionate about diving and fencing. Though these sports may seem vastly different, they both provide me with a sense of challenge, adventure, and personal growth. I first became interested in diving at age 7. Since then, I have been honing my skills and challenging myself to take on increasingly difficult dives. For me, diving is not just a physical challenge, but also a mental one. It requires me to overcome fears and doubts, focus my mind and body, and trust in my training and preparation. Fencing, on the other hand, requires me to think quickly on my feet, anticipate my opponent's moves, and stay calm under pressure. It is a sport that demands both physical and mental endurance, as well as a deep understanding of strategy and technique.
