Working as a software engineer in the defence sector on various sonar projects for submarines. Most have been obsolescence projects due to end of life for hardware, but a need for the product to continue to function, working with C++, Linux and drivers. The job entails working on improving the technology for controlling the cars remotely, both software and hardware. From a software perspective (all C++, on Linux), the work has included refactoring the PID controllers, adding new features, setting up new vehicle PCs and fixing bugs with either the vehicle or teleoperation systems. The communication between the two systems is via 4G networking using ROS.In a hardware context, I have designed and fitted the battery management systems in the car to allow charging of the external battery, used for powering the vehicle computer, whilst driving. Furthermore, I have fitted and validated the hardware for interfacing the secondary controls in the vehicles, which allows the control of lights, gears, wipers and so on from the teleoperation station. I have begun work on writing the code for interfacing this with our system. On the testing side of it, I have developed unit tests for safety-critical control modules run on the vehicles, such as the controllers and CAN interfacing modules. It required stepping in on multiple different projects where work was needed.Successfully developed interface software between X-Plane (a PC Flight Simulator application) and Stirling Dynamics’s proof of concept passive stick, Wasp SP. This was a one-off 4 week contract where I had to analyse and record how the Telefonica office space was used in their site in south Leeds.

Worked with the module leader to help run the first year module on microcontrollers. This was a three hour lab each week, helping to teach people coding from scratch, moving on to working on Mbed and coding in C.

Throughout my time at Leeds University, I helped out with the open days and applicant days, which included tasks such as explaining the course, doing tours, presentations and answering questions.

Clent

Worked as a barman/waiter, generally working around 5 days a week during the summer and Christmas holidays whilst at university. Used to busy shifts such as full restaurant around Christmas as well as large party groups. Responsibilities included running shifts and opening, closing and locking up the pub.

Leeds

Worked as part of the launch of the new site in The Light Centre in Leeds. I had two weeks training before working until around Christmas, before stopping to focus on my university studies, as i was working here whilst undertaking my second year at uni.
