Member
CurrentChair, Board Of Trustees
CurrentI have helped SAW grow by 300% without giving up their original grassroots identity. Populating the Board with strong members from the community, I have helped secure funding, build partnerships, establish committees, and support the staff through a major redevelopment project. I help ensure sustainable growth and achievable goals. After two years of renovations and more years of intense planning in collaboration with the City of Ottawa, SAW reopened its doors in July 2019. It was a colossal achievement.
Development & Fundraising Officer
The Ottawa School of Art is a community-based organization dedicated to Visual Arts education for students of all ages and abilities. Our school runs 5 major education programs and 2 public galleries at 2 campuses. Working alongside the Board of Directors and Executive Director, I strategically plan and develop projects and revenues in alignment with OSA’s vision, mission and values. Working with multiple partners, both public and private, I connect and negotiate ideas, ventures and proposals to build on various requests and deliverables. Through sponsorship, grant writing, donor relations and retention, stewardship, event planning, PR, promotions and outreach, I build and nurture connections inside and outside of the school, to meet and exceed fundraising targets and build on the schools brand. As the head of my department I assess the effectiveness of the schools revenue initiatives, establishing proper reporting, analyzing, and record keeping. I consistently meet and exceed yearly targets. The core of my mandate is to strengthen and cultivate relationships—with individuals, organizations, and the community. Through listening and collaborating I believe I have significantly improved communication among our donors, staff, Board, partners, artists and the City. Specifically, my relationship building has led to a substantial rise in Board engagement.Over the years I have created, curated and managed significant OSA events, including annual galas, exhibitions, golf tournaments, dinners, conferences, workshops, programs and others. I have also helped to elevate OSA’s brand by Representing OSA at community events, fundraisers, discussion panels, presentations, fairs, city events, conferences, galas and TV interviews, I believe I have helped to significantly enhance the school’s public persona and presence.
Visual Arts Instructor
Teaching Gr.10 and Gr. 11 Visual Arts at a private school. I followed the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum, designing courses that fit its mandate and requirements. I created my own course plan, projects, tests, and exams.
Resident Curator, Fritzi Gallery
Curated exhibitions that aligned themselves with the theatre shows at the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Before each show I would get the script, and create a theme based on the show. Artists were chosen mainly through “artist calls.” I showcased artists of different races, languages, backgrounds and education. I created a gallery schedule, managed all artist calls and all communication with artists, selected artists and art, managed PR, promotions, installations, artist talks, and sales. I also did a good portion of public speaking, YouTube videos, social media posts, blogging and print articles. I went on to curate this space for the next 3 years, trying my hardest to turn it into a reputable gallery space in Ottawa, where audiences could see artwork that they wouldn’t normally see in other Ottawa galleries and by artists that were not getting the light they deserved. I did get the opportunity to be more creative with exhibits that did not align themselves with what was happening in the theatre. I was able to showcase the artists that now form the Ottawa Black Art Kollective (OBAK), Indigenous artists, many francophone artists, other artists of colour, and emerging artists. The little space, hiding up in the top lobby of a theatre centre, gained notoriety, and was covered in the Ottawa Citizen, Metro, local newspapers, CTV and CBC.
Receptionist
As the first person customers, guests and students see as they walk into the school, I welcomed visitors in a warm and friendly manner, answered questions and handled clerical work. I answered and directed phone calls, registered students, and took care of the boutique, gallery and art supply store. I maintained the reception area and main common areas. I received deliveries, sorted and distributed incoming mail, maintained a filling system and was a support on many different projects to the rest of the administrative team.
Children'S Head Technician/Camp Counsellor
As the Head technician for my team, I was responsible for maintaining a positive, motivated work environment while we supervised children, created activities, and assisting instructors. I was responsible for training new team members, maintaining the petty cash, organizing forms, scheduling team members, and answering questions and concerns from parents.
Stylist, Representative
Stylist and Sales Lead for my team, I concentrate on customer relationships while working at sales, cash and training. I resolve problems for customers and co-workers, and act as a positive role model for younger staff. Working in a fast-paced environment, I promote an organized, reliable and accountable work space
