One of my most formative experiences was teaching ESL to Elementary students in Madrid, Spain. Early in the school year, Pablo, a special-needs student, pushed his assignment in front of me for feedback. I nodded at him to wait but he misunderstood the gesture as negative feedback. He nodded at me, assured me he could do better, and vigorously began redoing the assignment. One-by-one all eight students did the same thing. I was shocked. My learning-challenged students were starving for a challenge. I've kept this lesson with me in every program I've designed. We will do our greatest work when challenged.
