At NCSA, I wore many different hats, but one of my biggest accomplishments was building and managing three production OpenStack clusters — one of which is still in use today with more than 4000 vCPUs and 25TB RAM.In my free time, I work on my other passion — plants — where I get my nerd on blending horticulture and technology. For example, I programmed the backend for the University of Illinois Arboretum apps and helped with some coding on the Android version. I also built and coded an irrigation controller using a Raspberry Pi, and I manage a 20+ node cloud cluster as my personal playground for technology and "plant-related" things. My garden is filled with thousands of rare outdoor plants, and is even mapped out on a grid that uses weatherproof NFC tags to identify everything.Innovation inspires me. Not exactly a job per se, but more of a personal playground. Evolved from a server in the basement on an ISDN line, then DSL, then a T1, then a couple of servers on Slicehost, then Linode, to it's current incarnation as a 20+ node infrastructure hosted in Hetzner and Linode's clouds and managed by Puppet. And then there's the homelab...Most of this is centered around hosting hort.net (correct, I am not a graphic designer) and some other personal domains, and includes things like mail servers, DNS servers, AMQP (0-9-1), LDAP, SQL, Redis, Kerberos, web services, GitLab, etc. It's a place where I try out ideas, write code, and test new technologies.
