About Malte Höpfner

At TolaData, we build a digital tool for the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of NGOs, foundations, social enterprises and donors.I’m working at the nexus of social entrepreneurship, international development, IT/Tech, Monitoring & Evaluation, NGO consulting, inclusive business, startup incubation and impact investing. At the heart of my work, I am a bridge builder, be it between the non-profit, for-profit and public sector, between users and developers, between different industries or different cultures. I’ve had the privilege to live and work in countries in Europe, West Africa, East Africa, South East Asia and Latin America, and work with a wide range of people, from smallholder farmers in Vietnam and Costa Rica, to NGO workers in Burkina Faso and Tanzania, entrepreneurs in Brazil, politicians in Germany, and impact investors in France. My academic background – an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics (UK) and a BA in International Relations from the Universities of Dresden (Germany) and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – supports this work.I have 15+ years of experience being a social entrepreneur and working in international development, having co-founded and set-up three social start-ups on three continents. One of the ventures I co-founded received a 6 million USD investment from a large multilateral development bank and local investors in 2017. I have also made several (impact) investments over the last years.Using my 20+ years of experience as a (part time) web developer and coder, I am also connecting the sectors of International Development and IT, in the fields of ICT4D, Tech for Good and digitization / digital transformation. At TolaData, I'm part of a team building software specifically for the non-for-profit sector.I am both into numbers (Excel, coding, business modeling) and languages (Word, writing business plans). One of my passions is football/soccer. Above all, I love getting to know people and understanding what drives them.

  • Inocas - Soluções Em Meio Ambiente S.A.
    Business Developer And Co-Founder
    Inocas - Soluções Em Meio Ambiente S.A. Jul 2012 - Feb 2018
Patos De Minas, Minas Gerais, Br
INOCAS is the spin-off company from the Innovation Incubator I had worked at from July 2012 to March 2014. We are developing a plant oil company in Brazil, applying a unique approach that combines cultivating Macauba, a native oil fruit bearing species, with cattle-farming. This agroforestry approach allows us to produce large quantities of plant oil without any of the negative effects associated with conventional plant oil production such as land-use-change, land-grabbing and deforestation. Furthermore, the incomes of smallholder farmers and land workers can be increased significantly.Proposed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), our business plan was ranked 1st in a global competition by the Worldbank's Forest Investment Program. Consequently, we were able to raise 6 million USD, with the IDB being the lead-investor, together with Brazilian investors. This was the first equity investment of this kind ever undertaken by the IDB.In the 2015 edition of the German-Brazilian innovation award, our social business finished in the top ten among more than 800 participants.Tasks of mine included:- conducting a business feasibility study including field work in Brazil- conducting market research and speaking to potential off-takers of products- co-authoring the business plan- coding the financial model- pitching to (impact) investors- accompagnying the investment due diligence process, including two field visits with investors- negotiating with investors, government authorities, and banks- negotiating and editing of equity investment term sheets and contracts as well as loan and grant contracts- defining of impact indicators and setting up of M&E systemFor recommendations, see also the position "Project Developer at Innovation Incubator, Leuphana University".

During these events, participants can exchange with the organizations in-person and learn about their projects. In addition to increasing awareness and publicity for the organizations' work, these events can raise funds.More than 1,800 NGOs from around the world added their profile to our website, 130 of which we published after a review. Somondo has registered users from more than 180 countries. After developing the idea, coding the platform and launching it in 2014, we ran this project as a non-profit side project besides our regular jobs until 2018.
