Field Archaeologist
I work on and off this company while I'm working on my PhD as an excavation specialist periodically. I helped at multiple excavations sites that were mostly Roman. We excavation evidence of a settlement area with hearths and a storage or dumping pit fill of broken pottery sherds. I have also helped investigate possible archaeological sites by surveying and excavations.
Archaeological Assistant
At my time at ISAS, I excavated around 150 to 200 features during field excavation. These included pits, structures, posts, post pits, burials, and wall trenches. Also, on rainy days I washed and labeled artifacts from the field. I perfected my mapping skills and my shovel scrapping skills. I perfected my mapping skills and my shovel scrapping skills. I’m cautious with bone and helped the osteologist identify human remains from fauna. Fieldwork ended around Oct 2012. I was sent to the lab to further help with human remains and pick through the flots taken. I was looking for small elements of human remains such as enamel flecks. After I was finishing there, I joined the Lithics team. From Oct 2012 to Aug 2013, I spend my time looking through all the lithics found on site. I was responsible for identifying types of chert and types of tools and discussing possible functions of the tools. I also helped supervise other members of the team and the crew of washers and labels; I answered relevant questions about lithics and chert. Show less
Archaeological Intern
During my internship, I excavated at a few different sites. I excavated some pits and burials at Carson Mounds. I usually shovel scrapped the surface to find features, then helped the archaeologist to record and excavate the feature; most of the time they were burials. I also helped excavate a large burial pit in a shell midden. At the end of the internship, I composed a detailed journal and paper of my account during the internship.
Archaeological Volunteer
At Cahokia Mounds, I participated in an archaeological excavation. This excavation was for part of Mound 34. It had been excavated in the 1940s. We were looking for evidence of a copper workshop. We excavated in meter-by-meter squares at ten-centimeter intervolves. This taught me how to measure the distance from the surface. I also learned basic excavation techniques including shovel scrapping and mapping skills.
