I am a feminist, queer activist and development professional. I work to enable gender justice, sexuality rights, health equity, social inclusion and youth leadership of social change. Engagement with feminist and queer movements during higher education and at the initial stage of my career helped me clarify my own identity, perspective and practice and guide my life and work. I dream of a world that encourages reflective personal and social transformation. Where "who I want to be" is a more important quest than "what I will do for a living". I find purpose in working with people to spark curiosity, enable critical thinking, and build capacities to lead towards this vision. I have led interventions, campaigns and organisations towards this purpose. My profile lists organisations and designations, but I'd like to share the most significant things I have learnt through my work. This is what I hope to take and build on, in every space I engage with in future. 1. I made a film on my family and how my mother negotiated marriage, motherhood, desires and aspirations. This taught me that movements are public and political, but also deeply personal. That changing the world must begin with examining one's own privileges, choices and stances. 2. I worked on a remote island to support young tribal leaders to participate in and direct development and rebuilding after the 2004 Tsunami in the Nicobar islands. I witnessed the strength of community resilience in rebuilding after devastation and learnt to give up illusions of "helping" in exchange for an understanding of working alongside to support community leadership. 3. I led a research on how copyrights apply to cultural production and artistic works and realised that market driven systems of production create compelling but false narratives of rewarding excellence and creativity. I was reminded on this during the pandemic where building back prioritised profit making over life making, markets over people. The work of movements led by those who are oppressed and made marginalised is different, and reaffirms my resolve to work towards a better world. 4. I led a youth organisation that works to inspire young people to approach the world with a rights based, intersectional and feminist perspective. To choose loving, positive leadership instead of polarising hate. This taught me that leadership is tough, but sharing leadership and power is tougher. That institutions are built on strong relationships and that collaborative, affirming spaces enable greater impact in the world.
