Bringing innovative approaches to engaging communities to the delivery of Beat the Street. This initiative uses citywide gamification to reduce health inequalities by getting people to be active. It is an exciting project that invites the community to walk, cycle, skate or scoot as far as they can in 6 weeks. Developed as a real-world walking game, Beat the Street encourages players to track their travel using smartcards that they tap on ‘Beat Boxes’, found along their journey. Those who take part can earn points by swiping their personalised contactless smart cards or key fobs against a ‘Beat box’ secured on lamp posts across their local area. Real-time data is sent to a central database and participants can follow their progress on a secure website. As Beat the Street is a community based challenge, we try to encourage all primary and secondary schools to take part within the scheme coverage area. We also invite GP practices, sports clubs, businesses and voluntary organisations and community groups. They are invited to compete against each other to see which one can accumulate the most points. Each group or school is set up as a team to compete for prizes Show less -
