Invited back after my previous placement at JCB Earthmovers, this time I spent one month at JCB's World Headquarters as I delved into various facets of JCB's 'Group Operations'. From exploring investment in welding robots and improving OEE through my 'Shift vs Load' project to conducting offline robot programming, I firstly dove deep into automation. Then I got involved in JCB's global projects, gaining insights into strategic manufacturing transfers moving production across the globe. I also engaged in the shotblasting and paint facility processes, tackling challenges like colour-matching the iconic 'JCB yellow' with new robots, and contributing to the installation of new sensors on production lines to inform improvement of operational efficiency. Afterwards, I explored the digital interfacing systems that keep track of production processes in real time: working with the Digital team, I set up an MQTT broker to monitor oil contaminants, implementing an access control system and creating an SQL relational database managed by a Node.js application in JavaScript.

Insight week work experience, exploring and taking part in numerous areas of engineering involved in the manufacturing of automotive vehicles in the agricultural industry at JCB.In between experience sessions with various engineers, I was additionally working on a project. The project was highly focused on the people, machines and parts needed to carry out the individual jobs of putting together two Earthmover models being sold (TM320 and TM420), considering the limitations of time and cost. I used Microsoft Excel to organise data in graphical and tabular models, and then carried out statistical analysis to make the TM320 and TM420 systems as efficient as possible, as a result saving JCB Earthmovers approximately £400,000 worth of cost each year. I then presented my project to the General Operations Manager at JCB Earthmovers, who was highly impressed, telling me that they will implement my project into the actual system after some professional tuning. I was then invited to return to JCB at any time in the future for further work experience. It is a project often carried out by Manufacturing Engineers, but with my technical skills and independent time during the week, I was told I was able to carry this out much more efficiently than usual for JCB. It helped me learn a great deal about the process of putting together large machinery from individual parts to the final product, both by-hand and with the use of robots.
