Profile bio

About Mangesh Champhekar

Very good team player and listener. Motivated and hardworking. The past 5.5 years have given me great working experience managing pilot line and production facility trials, working with suppliers to tailor raw materials (resins and nonwovens) to improve my product and also save on cost. My work experience also includes dealing with customers, understanding their needs for end product performance and designing a product (baby diaper ears for open diapers, a side panel for training pants, adult incontinence side panels, or even ear loops for face masks). Apart from my current interests which includes film extrusion of plastics (elastic materials), nonwovens, film-to-nonwoven lamination processing, my areas of research interests include but are not limited to thermal, mechanical and surface characterization of polymeric materials, multi-phase materials like copolymers, alloys and biodegradable materials.

Listed skills include Polymers, Polymer Science, Polymer Characterization, Characterization, and 23 others.

Postdoctoral Researcher

The goal of the project was to knit tri-component monofilament fibers (nylon-6, nylon- 6,6 and PET were the components of the monofilament yarns) with different denier, elongations and cross-sections and dye them using sponsor specifications. Caustic washing treatment was deemed necessary to make the monofilaments knittable during the first stage of the project, while the yarns were knitted without any treatment during the second stage of the project. SEM micrographs were used to detect the change in the cross-sections of the monofilaments before and after knitting (and/or after caustic treatments) and after dyeing. (Advisors: Dr. Peter Hauser and Dr. Jon Rust)

Ra/Ta

Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area

1. Dynamic properties of single-phase and multi-phase polymers on a micro and macro scales were studied using dynamic nanoindentation and conventional DMA respectively. A good agreement was observed between the dynamic properties studied using nanoindentation and conventional DMA.2. Quasi-static nanoindentation was used to measure the static elastic modulus and hardness of the materials on the micro scale. The static and dynamic properties of a biopolymer Poly(L-lactic acid) were also studied as a function of crystallinity using nanoindentation measurements.3. Indentation size effect where the hardness (and modulus) values decrease with increase in indentation depth was observed for the single phase and multi-phase materials with the error being higher in the case of the multi-phase materials, mostly due to the presence of different phases. The observation in our case was similar to the one found in the literature, with no concrete proof of the fact that higher error in multi-phase materials was due to the presence of multiple phases.(Advisor: Dr. Wendy Krause)
