Profile bio

About Manisha Sharma, Phd

I am a research professional with a strong background in plant molecular biology. My passion lies in using molecular and bioinformatics tools to explore the intricate interactions between plants and their environment, with a specific focus on enhancing crop nutritional value and yield. My research journey has provided me with a profound understanding of plant biology, and I am driven to apply this knowledge to elevate crop production and sustainability.Currently, I contribute to exciting research as a Plant Molecular Biologist at NIAB, focusing on regulatory elements in crops. Previously, I have served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Exeter, investigating plant growth-defense tradeoffs and PIF4-mediated regulation of immunity. I've also worked at CRAG in Spain, delving into fungal pathogenesis and its impact on plant stress responses.Throughout my career, I've published extensively and received recognition, including the 'Exceptional Promise in the Field' from the Royal Society, UK. My expertise spans various molecular techniques, biochemistry, and plant physiology.I thrive in strategic project planning, result analysis, and manuscript writing. I'm an advocate for sustainable agriculture and believe that the key to a better future lies in understanding the intricate dance between plants and their environment.I possess the legal 'right to work' in the United Kingdom.

Plant Molecular Biologist

Current

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

I am involved in the characterization of a multitude of regulatory elements in crops. This involves performing Multisite cloning, Validation of copy number, transcripts, and protein expression in transformed crops using qPCR, and Western blotting. Qualitative and quantitative detection of Histochemical and Fluorescent reporters in plants for the RE efficiency analysis.

Jan 2022 - Present

Postdoctoral Researcher

Exeter, United Kingdom

My supervisor here, Dr. Vinod Kumar is a leading authority on plant environmental signaling and chromatin biology. Despite the pandemic, together we have generated several genetic tools (double and higher-order mutants) to study growth-defense tradeoffs in plants. I was investigating the mechanisms by which PIF4 controls immunity in response to the environment. In addition, I have also contributed to the characterization of temperature-induced alterations in immunity signaling.

Jan 2020 - Dec 2021

Postdoctoral Researcher

Barcelona Area, Spain

During my tenure, I had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Maria Lois, a renowned authority in plant biochemistry and stress signaling. Together, we worked on a project aimed at identifying necrotrophic fungal molecular pathogenic determinants that target the plant SUMOylation system. As part of thisproject, I established an in vitro protein degradation assay to monitor the depletion of SUMO in plantsfollowing fungal infection. Through these efforts, we gained valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying fungal pathogenesis and their impact on plant stress responses.

Jul 2018 - Dec 2019

Research Associate

Nrcpb, Iari,

New Delhi

Completed the temporal and spatial comparative transcriptome analysis of the Linum usitatissimum during salinity stress conditions.

Mar 2018 - Jun 2018

Ph.D. Scholar

New Delhi, India

During my Ph.D., I led various research projects that focused on the functional and biochemical characterization of stress genes identified through genome-wide microarray expression analysis. One such study, which I led as the primary author, involved the classification of the Armadillo (ARM) gene family in Oryza sativa, revealing the significant role of these repeat proteins in catalyzing protein-protein interactions within cells. These findings also shed light on the abiotic stress signaling pathways that regulate drought, salt, and cold stress, implicating E3 ubiquitin ligases as the dominant stress signaling regulators in Oryza sativa. As part of this work, I optimized an in vitro ubiquitination assay for the biochemical analysis of E3 ligase proteins and performed functional characterization of two of the ARM proteins (OsPUB75 and AtPUB2) through this approach.
