Family Planning Association of India is an affiliated organisation with International Planned Parenthood Federation and aims to reach out to the marginalized people through its 40 Branches spread across the country. As part of the FPAI team, I had an opportunity to contribute to the aims and objectives of the IPPF and FPAI and share my expertise at the national and international level as well as to work at grass route level through the number of Branches in India. - Managed 36 FPAI Branches across India to implement the Association’s youth programmes- Contributed to develop five year strategic plan for the Association. Have been instrumental to bring out FPAI’s Youth Policy and Youth Participation Guidelines. - Started Adolescent Reproductive Health Care Clinics in the existing Reproductive Health Family Planning Clinics, to provide adolescent friendly services in the clinic set up. - Devised special guidelines to execute the first of its kind Adolescent Friendly clinics in the existing RHFPCs (Reproductive Health Family Planning Clinics) at selected Branch locations- Wrote number of project proposals and secured funding worth thousands of dollars from national and international donors including IPPF, Netherlands Trust Funds, Japan Trust Fund and Westwind Foundation. - Participated in two SAR Youth Summits and developed cadre of more than 500 youth volunteers. - Participated in number of workshops and meetings organized by IPPF on Strategic Planning, Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health, Log frame approach and so on- Initiated Youth Projects providing youth friendly services by establishing youth centres with funding support from various international donors such as IPPF, Netherlands Trust Funds, Japan Trust Fund and Westwind Foundation- Developed special guidelines for effective implementation of Adolescent programme and STI/ HIV/AIDS Programmes for young people and others in the community.

FAD was founded by former Sherriff of Mumbai, Mr. Nana Chudasama. FAD’s charter was to undertake mass mobilisation programmes such as rallies, school/college talks, and entertainment events on drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. It also acted as a nodal body for NGOs in the field for coordinating the efforts. As a part of the small team of FAD, I was responsible for organising several of such programmes.

NARC is treatment-cum-research NGO based in suburban Mumbai and exclusively catering to poor drug abusers. I was involved in running a Crisis Intervention Programme for the acutely ill patients who, apart from drug abuse, suffered from other associated diseases and infirmaries. My job involved extensive community based work for identifying patients, enlisting them, and doing post-treatment follow-up. The follow-up work usually involved talking to patient’s relatives and family and the work wasn’t restricted to merely counselling and teaching coping skills, but also involved active persuasion in community to aid recovery. This was particularly important because, several drug users were HIV/AIDS affected and hence, intervention strategies had to be suitably modified. Organising prevention programmes such as street plays, video shows, talks and other community-based events was also part of the assignment.

SUPPORT works directly for the street children, CSWs, drug users and other downtrodden groups. I spent my formative years at SUPPORT working with these groups by educating them on the evils of drug use, health matters such as STDs, HIV/AIDS and so on. Part of the job included assisting the affected to treatment, rehabilitation and other such programmes through Government, Municipality and NGOs bodies.
