I was involved in running a Crisis Intervention Programme for the acutely ill patients who, apart from drug abuse, suffered from other associated diseases and infirmaries. My job involved extensive community based work for identifying patients, enlisting them, and doing post-treatment follow-up. The follow-up work usually involved talking to patient’s relatives and family and the work wasn’t restricted to merely counselling and teaching coping skills, but also involved active persuasion in community to aid recovery. This was particularly important because, several drug users were HIV/AIDS affected and hence, intervention strategies had to be suitably modified. Organising prevention programmes such as street plays, video shows, talks and other community-based events was also part of the assignment.
