The facility supports the creation of new MFI’s, as well as downscaling banks and other organizations to serve the sector.The development objective was to increase the availability of affordable financial services to 200,000 households, by supporting the emergence of commercially viable and sustainable microfinance service providers.Some major accomplishments include:- Setting up the first Micro Finance Service Company model in the Northern State. Only the second such company in Africa, and a very successful option for big banks to increase outreach in the MF sector.- Running a Training of Trainers program, so as to produce a core group of highly qualified MF trainers for the future.- Establishing an umbrella MFI for the Community Based Organizations of Khartoum State.- Establishing the Sudanese Association of MF Institutions, and introducing MF services through the postal system (Sudapost).- Upgrading and registration of the Port Sudan Association of Small Enterprises, as a MFI.- Upgrading and increasing outreach of the largest MFI in Sudan, the Social Development Foundation, Khartoum, and other smaller ones in Kassala, N/S Kordofan and Darfur Provinces.- Providing a turnaround strategy for the Sudan Rural Development Corporation, and the Family Bank.- Setting up joint projects with International donor agencies such as UNDP/UNHCR/WFP/IFAD/WB/ILO, all over Northern Sudan.- Capacity building of the SMDF local staff, management and board of directors, and development of a Business/Sustainability Plan.
