In 2014, I came to Central Florida to use my teaching and publishing experiences to facilitate language learning and get disadvantaged youth college—and career-ready. I used my experience to “jumpstart” their academic experience. After several years in Florida, I have been able to help open the academic doors that were shut for many of the recently arrived and disadvantaged youth. An afterschool club gave birth to an educational program that has impacted second language learners in Florida and other ESL students out-of-state as well. The educational program empowered teenage immigrants to care for, share, and position others like them to become successful, proactive, and career-ready youths. From published authors to spotlight speakers and college and career readiness students, my lifetime coaching experience has helped hundreds of students in their journey through high school, college, and beyond. The treasure chest opened wide. Through simple yet structured storytelling, students have been able to receive scholarships for their two-year, four-year college experience. At the same time, ex-club members have become mentors to other students who like them are going through the same process they went through years before. Other ex-club members have joined the program in hopes of helping more students develop college and career readiness skills. The keen grassroots effort has received numerous awards, and the media in Central Florida has featured students, ex-students, and its founder in interviews and documentaries in local and major television outlets and in write-ups in local and nationally recognized newspapers like The New York Times and scholarly-based and award-winning journals like The English Journal.I am willing to help you and others like you to transform the education of disadvantaged teens in your school, district, and state. As a matter of fact, I can even help impact the education of disadvantaged youths at a national level. English ProfessorUniversity Of Phoenix Nov 2010 - May 2014Puerto Rico CampusAs professor of basic and advanced writing courses at the University of Phoenix Puerto Rico Campus, I had the privilege and challenge to encourage my students to take writing skills to further levels of success. Through my guidance, students learned to distinguish between interpretive and analytical writing while using the writing process and specific rhetorical strategies to develop argumentative and persuasion essays and a case study analysis, and learning teams and prepared an applied research paper. The course offered exercises for review of the elements of grammar, mechanics, style, citation, and proper documentation. -

English As A Second Language TeacherNyc Department Of Education Sep 1988 - Jun 1991I was an English as a Second Language teacher for high school students. As an English as a Second Language teacher in New York City from 1988 to 1991, my classes had many recently-arrived high school students from such Latin American countries as El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Puerto Rico – many of these immigrants with barely one, perhaps two years of residence in the United States. When I first received the course syllabi for these so-called “ESL” tenth-grade classes, I would notice Hemingway, Poe and Shakespeare among the group of “canon” writers to be read during the semester; I was, of course, enthusiastic and quite elated about beginning the semester engaged with such amazing authors and works. But after an intensive month of Romeo and Juliet, I quickly understood, with some initial disillusionment, that I had a major predicament on my hands. Yet, my students’ hunger to learn was intense. I had to find a way to bridge the gap. That's when I discovered the power of Latino/a Literature to construct bridges of understanding to teach these students to learn English, read, stay in school and pass the citiy-wide exams.
