Manuel Pichardo Marcano, Phd Email and Phone Number
I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Fisk University and Vanderbilt University. My background is in Physics and I have a PhD and several Masters in Physics and Astronomy. I have been using Python and Unix to study stellar systems in old star clusters. I had to perform timing and statistical analysis of time-series data. The analysis includes image processing of space-based telescopes, time-series de-trending techniques, outlier detection and Fourier analysis. I have led and co-led several international projects that resulted in several academic journals and accepted research proposals. I have studied and have degrees from 3 different countries and have worked in many international scientific collaborations. All these experiences have taught me how to work effectively in different groups with different cultures and dynamics. I also share my time doing scientific outreach and mentoring. I have organized and co-led 30+ outreach and science divulgation activities in English and Spanish. This includes going to school, after-school programs, museums and astronomical amateur societies meetings in the US and in the Dominican Republic. I have supervised 5 high school and undergraduate students in several research projects in astronomy. Including a machine learning year-long research project. I also have been part of Astrobitos and worked as a Wiki Scientist creating Wikipedia science pages in Spanish and English.

Astrophysicist, Postdoctoral Research FellowAmerican Museum Of Natural History Sep 2022 - Oct 2023New York, New York, United States* Competitive prize fellowship for independent research across all scientific disciplines. Research areas include star clusters, compact binaries, variables stars and astrophysical transients. * Working on an international project to find variable and periodic sources in the old star clusters. The work requires working with high-volume, high-dimensionality datadatasets, and time-series analysis. Responsibilities include implementing and researching new period-finding algorithms, and unsupervised machine learning tools, for the current pipeline in development to search for variable sources.* Mentoring 3 high school students on machine learning year-long research project. -
Research And Teaching AssistantTexas Tech University 2016 - 2022Lubbock, Texas, United States* PhD student working on stellar binaries and old star clusters. Led and co-led multiple projects with international teams that resulted in 6 publications and 3 accepted telescope proposals. * Used Python and pandas to develop a pipeline to search for variability and periodicity in a large photometric dataset. For this performed timing and statistical analysis of time-series data. The analysis includes image processing of space-based telescopes, time-series de-trending techniques, outlier detection and Fourier analysis. -
