About Manuela Moor

As a mathematician, I am drawn towards solving problems and, being myself, I am all about cleanliness and order. The world is filled with problems and chaos, so I suppose I will never get bored.I did my PhD in applied/computational mathematics where I used adaptive wavelet element methods for solving partial differential equations. In addition to gaining a lot of insight about wavelets and the theory surrounding them, as well as other methods for solving boundary integral equations, I also obtained a lot of experience in programming in C. As a PhD student I enjoyed having the opportunity and time to really lose myself in the depths of the matter.Driven by my desire to have an impact in the real world, I joined the University Hospital Basel. There, the problems I've been facing mainly revolve around health data and challenges that arise within a clinical setting, i.e. the technical/data part thereof. It is needless to say that everyone craves and benefits from clean and organized data, while it is almost never produced this way. So I do my share in either maintaining, cleaning and analyzing data myself or coordinating projects and enabling researchers and engineers to do so themselves.Everything gets more interesting as soon as more (and especially external) collaborators join the party. Tasks surrounding data and IT, like connecting data systems, steering data flows, de-identification/anonymization, procuration of servers or space on a cluster, are still present and important. However, a plethora of new exciting challenges arise: How do you realize the deployment of an AI system, that many want to use but no one wants to pay for? How do you convince different departments to collaborate and share data for interdisciplinary projects?I thrive in this diverse setting that involves coding, tech support as well as project management and team play. The only thing I currently miss (sometimes) is the teaching/tutoring I did and loved very much during my PhD.
