As a distinguished bioinformatician with a profound passion for genomics and its revolutionary applications in personalised medicine, I have dedicated my career to bridging the gap between raw genomic data and actionable clinical insights. My academic journey began at the University of Navarra, where I received my degree in Biomedical Sciences. I then pursued a Master's degree and a PhD in Bioinformatics at the University of Manchester, complemented by 3.5 years of postdoctoral experience at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK.Currently, I serve as a Lecturer of Genomics at the University of Westminster, where I guide and inspire the next generation of genomic scientists. In parallel, as Chief Scientist and Founder of Cambridge Precision Medicine, I lead efforts to develop computational methodologies that enhance our understanding of human genomes. The pinnacle of my journey so far has been my recent appointment as a Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. This fellowship represents not only a recognition of my contributions to the field but also an opportunity to collaborate with leading minds in technology and data science. It is a platform through which I aim to further my research, contribute to the advancement of AI and genomics, and make a lasting impact on personalised medicine.Through my work, I strive to create a future where healthcare is more precise, tailored, and accessible. I am driven by the belief that through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to open science, we can unlock the full potential of genomics for the benefit of all.Feel free to connect with me to explore collaborations, share insights, or engage in discussions about the future of AI and Data Science in Genomics and Personalised Medicine.

FellowThe Alan Turing Institute Mar 2024 - PresentLondon, England, United KingdomBeing a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the United Kingdom's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, signifies a recognition of an individual's expertise and contributions in the fields of data science, artificial intelligence (AI), or related areas. Fellows are typically distinguished researchers or practitioners who have made significant impacts in their respective fields. The fellowship is an acknowledgment of one's standing in the academic and professional community, as well as their potential to contribute to the Institute's goals of advancing world-class research and applying it to real-world problems. -
Chief ScientistCambridge Precision Medicine Dec 2017 - PresentIdeaspace South, University Of Cambridge Biomedical Innovation Hub, UkCambridge Precision Medicine helps clinicians interpret genomics for accurate diagnoses, with the objective of enabling their patients to live longer and happier lives. Clinicians in all fields are now realising the impact of genetics in patient treatment. At Cambridge Precision Medicine we manage and simplify the whole process of genetic screening, from sample to report interpretation. We are independent of any one sequencing or interpretation provider and so are able to work with clinicians to help them choose the right service for their patients. We customise the whole process, and in particular the interpretation, to generate useful and actionable results, using certified laboratories, accredited physicians and experts in the field of genomics every step of the way. -
FellowSoftware Sustainability Institute Jun 2016 - PresentThe main goals of the programme are to develop computational best practices and to promote them across scientific disciplines. Fellows are committed to use software sustainability practices themselves in their own domains. -
Course DirectorUnir - La Universidad En Internet May 2019 - May 2023Madrid Area, SpainOur program is directed to medical practitioners wishing to understand how genomics and big data analysis techniques can help them develop more personalised and accurate diagnoses for their patients. We provide an extensive array of lectures: from next generation sequencing technologies, to bioinformatics, international regulation and principles of genetic counselling.I direct this accredited online course in Clinical Genetics and Personalised Medicine at UNIR - the leading online university of the Spanish speaking world. Part of my role as course director involves the development of its syllabus, practical sessions, coordination with external teachers and examination of students. We utilise a virtual online platform to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and the interactivity between students and tutors across many countries in different timezones. -
TutorUniversity Of Cambridge Jul 2018 - Jun 2022I am a registered University of Cambridge Madingley Hall tutor. As part of the University's Institute of Continuing Education, I provide part-time and short courses for professionals on Precision Medicine and Computational Genomics. I design both face-to-face and online training materials tailored to health professionals who would like to incorporate genomics as part of their practice. -

Project Leader For Plant And Animal GenomesEarlham Institute Feb 2012 - Aug 2016Norwich, United KingdomI lead the group of computational biologists at The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) working on plant and animal genomes within the Genome Analysis Team. This group is responsible for organizing the analysis of sequence generated at TGAC and also engaging with collaborators on the analysis of genome data. TGAC is specialised in the study of plants, microbes and animal genomes with the view to facilitate the development of new genomics-based biology in academic and commercial sectors. -
Postdoctoral FellowWellcome Trust Sanger Institute Oct 2010 - Feb 2012Develop methods for integration. visualization and analysis of genomic data. -
Senior DeveloperWellcome Trust Sanger Institute Sep 2008 - Feb 2012I develop DECIPHER, a web-based database that stores genomic array data and phenotypes from patients world-wide. DECIPHER is a powerful resource for clinical diagnosis and management of patients with congenital abnormalities, providing tools to help in the interpretation of copy number changes in patients with developmental disorders. Enabled by an international collaborative research consortium, DECIPHER hosts data from more than 2200 patients from over 100 centres in more than 20 countries. -
Scientific ProgrammerEbi Jan 2008 - Aug 2008Set up a systems biology database, EnDICTION, for integration of computer-generated predictions from the ENFIN network of Excellence. Data consisted mainly of protein-protein interaction, target genes, protein function annotation and metabolic pathways in the Reactome.org database. For this I created an extension of the data model of Reactome and provided an interface for authors to visualize their data within the Reactome Skypainter tool. -
Scientific CoordinatorSpanish National Bioinformatics Institute (Inb) Jul 2007 - Jan 2008Madrid Area, SpainDeveloped new web portal for the Institute, organized workshops and represented the Institute at National and International Meetings. -
Phd BioinformaticsUniversity Of Manchester Apr 2002 - May 2007Developed an integrative analysis of heterogeneous protein data sources (sequence, structure and functional annotations). Provided concrete proof for establishing the structural factors contributing most to sequence conservation. Created a tool (PFFmot) to characterize protein sequence motifs based on their structural content. This tool is able to predict functional sites based on the interplay of sequence conservation and destabilizing energies. Method used for enhancement of the PRINTS database's algorithm to find remote homologue proteins for protein family classification. -
