Hi, I am Manuel, founder of New Work by Design.I’ve worked with many companies that want to be more “New Work”. What this usually means to them is a mixture of agile product development and self-organization, but what they actually want are more engaged employees and more business success. What I doI specialize in New Work organizational design, helping companies implement just enough structure and process to ensure smooth operations and scalable growth without becoming bureaucratic. For whomI work with companies that seek to implement structure and processes but want to avoid bureaucratic stagnation. I guide them in establishing an organizational operating system that not only supports growth but also enhances their appeal as an employer - making the way they work the decisive reason why people join their company. How I do itOver the past decade, I've worked with three companies full-time, transforming them into New Work role models. Through these experiences, I've distilled the nine necessary key practices for a sustainable New Work implementation.I support companies in prioritizing, designing, implementing, and iterating the nine key practices in a way that serves their specific context while staying true to underlying principles that nourish self-organization and intrinsic motivation. Why I do itMy bigger goal is to create more fulfilling workplaces. I want us, as a society, to see and experience work differently. Not just as a job that pays the bills, but as a calling that energizes us and gives us meaning.I now support founders and organizational designers in making New Work a reality, making the way you work the decisive factor why people join and rave about your company.Who I amI started my career as a software engineer, which played to my strengths of being methodical and well-structured. However, I quickly became disillusioned by project management and client interactions that didn't feel "right".This led me to learn about Agile, Scrum, Lean, Kanban, and Lean Startup, gradually moving into the role as Agile Coach. I became proficient in supporting teams to work well together but noticed that systemic company issues stunted these improvements. This realization spurred my transition into organizational design, with a focus on motivation, relationships, and emotional intelligence.

Org Design & Transformation (In The Role Of Vp People)Celebrate Company May 2019 - May 2024Munich Area, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: Leading a multi-team unit of 30+ individuals has enriched my empathy for leaders. I cherish some deep connections made with remarkable colleagues that will last a lifetime. What I am proud of: Serving as a source of calmness, humanity, and positivity during the pandemic with short time work and eventually followed by layoffs. Witnessing the personal development of people over the course of 5 years. Upholding New Work principles while creating concrete practices tailored to diverse contexts. What I learned about myself: The context-switching that comes with leadership roles is a big drain on my energy. I crave deep focus. I feel most at home in pure digital tech companies. -
Org Design & Transformation (In The Role Of Leading The Org Function)Gini Gmbh Jan 2017 - Apr 2019Munich, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: The leadership group spent 9 months before they hired me to really understand if and why they want to transform the company into a network organization with autonomous teams. This plus their continued involvement in the change process was a prerequisite for a successful transformation and the required trust of all employees to give it a go.What I am proud of: We established a coherent self-organized system with autonomous teams as described in the Gini handbook. In particular our process to make decentralized decisions. What I learned about myself: On top of changing how people work, it is important to me what the purpose and the ownership structure of the company is. -
Course Instructor For Agile Product DevelopmentUniversity Of Regensburg Oct 2014 - Mar 2017Regensburg, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: Having the opportunity to shape people's perspective on product development and organizational structures early on.In my annual course "Agile product development" I am telling my students all the things about product development and organizations I wish I would have been told when I studied computer science. -
Agile CoachStylight Jan 2015 - Dec 2016Munich, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: I got to experience the growth of the company from 100 to 200+ employees and the organizational changes that come with it, a very data-driven approach to product development, as well as the exit of the founders. What I learned about myself: I want to work on something that has value for society. Profit is a means to an end, not the goal. Why I left: The exit and the secrecy and misinformation around it was a breach of trust for me. With the founders left also the desire for an agile organization among the leadership. I was lacking a company purpose that was meaningful to me. -
Agile Software Developer And CoachIt-Agile Gmbh Jan 2011 - Dec 2014GermanyWhat I am grateful for: I got to work with a variety of clients from small startups to big enterprises and through the exchange with colleagues, it felt like learning from even more experiences. I made the transition from coding to coaching/consulting. I learned a ton from my colleagues. I got to experience working in a network organization with autonomous teams and a company with a coop ownership model. What I learned about myself: I can perform well outside my comfort zone. I want to change how people work together. I think the model of the coercive power hierarchy is the wrong tool in the context of knowledge work. Why I left: With the birth of my son, I wanted to be at home every evening which is at odds with a consulting business that requires being on client site. I also wanted to work more intensively with a company (of my choice) for a longer period of time than is usual as a consultant. I found that my consulting work didn't have the long-lasting impact I was hoping for. -
Continuous Integration ConsultantIntegration Works Aug 2010 - Nov 2010Wellington, NzWhat I am grateful for: I got to focus on building a deployment pipeline that automated a 4h high-stress manual deployment process for a 24/7 mission critical system to the press of a button. What I learned about myself: I really enjoy simplifying processes and working with bleeding edge tech. Why I left: This was a fixed-time contract because I planned coming back to Germany. -
Software DeveloperWestpac Dec 2009 - Aug 2010Wellington, NzWhat I am grateful for: I got to experience product development in a highly regulated context. What I learned about myself: I cannot stand bureaucracy and high resistance to experiment and change. Why I left: I was planning to move back to Germany. I wanted to work at it-agile to sink my teeth into all things agile that I have grown so fond of. -
Software DeveloperIntegration Works Jun 2008 - Dec 2009Wellington, NzWhat I am grateful for: As employee #8, I got to experience startup life with all its ups and downs. I got to experiment with Scrum and Kanban in our projects. What I learned about myself: I enjoy working incrementally and iteratively that allows for early feedback which in turn leads to better products. I earned the confidence in myself to be able to start somewhere fresh and have an impact. Why I left: Internal politics and client relationships that were not on eye level. I also didn't feel fairly compensated for what I brought to the table. -
Software EngineerSd&M Ag Jan 2008 - May 2008Munich Area, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: I got to continue working on my former project within the same team as I did during my practical semester. What I learned about myself: Working in a smaller company allows me to identify stronger with it.Why I left: This was a fixed-time contract because I planned to move to New Zealand.

Intern Software EngineerSd&M Ag Nov 2006 - Apr 2007Munich Area, GermanyWhat I am grateful for: I got to experience the processes and structure of a big successful software development company. The time-quality trade-off in this context allowed for development with test automation that satisfied my own quality aspirations. What I learned about myself: Working in a smaller company allows me to identify stronger with it.Why I left: This was a fixed-time contract for a practical semester during my studies.
