About Manuel Muñiz
I am the Provost of IE University in Madrid and a Professor of Practice of International Relations. As Provost I contribute to IE’s strategic development, and lead the efforts on strategic growth and partnerships. IE University welcomes students every year from over 140 countries, has a diverse alumni network of 65,000 members, and keeps permanent offices in over 30 countries. Additionally, I am the Chair of the Board of Trustees of IE New York College in Manhattan.I am also the former Dean of IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs (SPEGA). As such I was responsible for the development of research and teaching in the fields of public policy and global affairs. SPEGA has 1,800 students distributed across undergraduate and graduate programs in Economics, Trade, Politics, International Relations, and International Development. My own academic work was focused on the fields of innovation and disruption, political economy, and regional and global governance.In June 2023, I was elected President of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), the world's foremost organization uniting top schools of global affairs and public policy. That same year, I was appointed a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution.From January of 2020 to July of 2021 I was State Secretary (Vice Minister) at the Spanish Foreign Ministry. In this capacity I led the Strategy and Foresight unit at the Ministry as well as the Economic Diplomacy team, and the Communications department, including the Office for Diplomatic Information. During this time we coordinated the crafting of Spain’s 2021-2024 Foreign Policy Strategy, and led the work on the National Strategy on Technology and Global Order, a document aimed at launching Spain’s Technology Diplomacy. While in office I also coordinated Spain’s OECD Ministerial Presidency of 2020. And I was a member of the Prime Minister’s Covid19 task force. From 2015 to 2017 I was the Director of the Program on Transatlantic Relations at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. And from 2017 to 2020 I was also a Senior Associate at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs as well as one of the promoters of its Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship.

Launched a new Master in International Development in partnership with the UN Staff College, a new Executive Master in Internationalization and Trade in partnership with the International Trade Center and the International Chamber of Commerce and a new Bachelor in Economics. Coordinated the financial and executive tasks associated with running a School with over 1000 students (both undergraduate and graduate) and 80 faculty members.Founded and supported numerous research centers and initiatives, including the Center for the Governance of Change and the PublicTech Lab, that focus on frontier issues in the fields of governance of emerging technologies. Led the newly created Arts & Humanities Division, providing content across the university on the Humanities, curing the faculty in this Area and building partnerships.
