About Manuel Stemmer
Every day we engage actively or unconsciously in complex social interactions with our friends, co-workers and environment. But have you ever thought about why we actually do that? Where is this coming from and what is going on in our brains? In order to tackle these big questions, my team and I combine different approaches and a suit of diverse technologies.Applying latest single-cell/nuclei sequencing and spatial transcriptomics technology helps me to pin-point the source of these social interactions via transcriptional changes in the brain of our cichlid fish at various behavioural states. On the other hand, I devised a multi-angle, infra-red and high-speed camera system to observe the behaviour of the fish even at night. On top, I am coordinating the adaptation of tracking algorithms to extract behavioural features within the captured data. Cichlid fish are the ideal candidate for us to study complex social interactions. In comparison to the vast majority of fish, cichlids build “nests” out of empty snail shells, pair-bond and actively take care of their brood, almost like birds do. Like humans and birds, fish are vertebrates and not so distant to us as you might think.
