My main interests are focused on illuminating the initial events in gastric cancer induced by H. pylori, the paradigm of a cancer-inducing bacterium. We are using gastric organoids (a novel human primary gastric cell model) which are crucial and will significantly advance our understanding of the initial processes of cellular transformation and cancer emergence. Moreover, I am aiming to genetically modify these gastric primary cells using the top edge CRISPR/Cas9 technology to decipher and model mutational changes in gastric pathology. Mainly, I am focused on the stage of gastric intestinal metaplasia which normally marks a ‘point-of-no-return’ where the progression towards cancer development runs independently of H. pylori.Specific areas of interest include: 1) organoids culture 2) CRISPR/Cas9 technology 3) lentivirus manipulation 4) infection linked cancer development 5) Helicobacter pylori infection 6) stem cell and gastric cancer 7) cancer therapies
