About Mara Simmons

PhD in Education. Dissertation was a study of traditional and charter high schools looking for organizational factors to contribute to student achievement. Masters in Education with an emphasis in curriculum design. I have been trained in a series of common instructional strategies along with always working on my ability to teach teachers and students. Stay tuned.Teacher Trainer/Program Designer in the UK- trained over 500 Secondary teachers and teacher trainees on behalf of Activate Learning in partnership with Oxford Brookes University. Learned about the UK secondary system during this time (2015-2020.)School Director- served as a leadership/instructional coach for high school principals in LAUSD. Helped school innovate and improve their student and parent engagement while empowering both leaders and teachers.Principal- I helped to found Early College Academy for Leaders and Scholars, a PUC School. Using the concept of implementing best practices around Toulmin writing approach, standards based grading, council, college prep, Early college design we successfully launched a new school serving over 60 different feeders grades 9-11 to start. We graduated our first senior class with 100% of the seniors graduating and 50% of them receiving college acceptances to four year schools. This school is co-located with three LAUSD pilot schools and another charter. Together we have created a positive campus-wide environment that reflects a student body that has pride. Principal- I was the second principal at Animo Leadership, the first Green Dot School. I helped develop the foundation of Animo Leadership and the beginnings of Green Dot. Animo Leadership was in its second year when I came on board and I stayed through the first graduating class. These three years were the foundation to build a great charter school. Two years in a row Animo Leadership has been on the top 100 US News School List.
