I am the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Growing Up Boulder, a nonprofit whose mission is to center young people's rights, voices, and agency to advance equitable and sustainable communities for all. Using Boulder, CO as our learning laboratory, we have developed an approach that is used locally, nationally, and internationally. In collaboration with the City of Boulder and UNICEF USA, we are leading to process to make Boulder the first UNICEF Child Friendly City in Colorado. Growing Up Boulder also created the country's first printed, bilingual, "child friendly city map," which we distribute yearly to 20,000 local and visiting families.I write and present globally on engaging young people in community planning and child-friendly cities. My talk, “How Kids Can Help Design Cities,” is featured on TED and has received more than 2.3 million views and been translated into 21 languages. I co-authored the book Placemaking with Children and Youth: Participatory Practices for Planning Sustainable Communities with Professors Victoria Derr and Louise Chawla. Prior to Growing Up Boulder, I was helped start and direct of a community school, where I oversaw child and family support services on a socioeconomically disadvantaged school campus. I have designed and implemented programs for underrepresented children, families and neighborhoods in New York and California.
