“Taking away somebody’s liberty is probably one of the most serious things we can do in anyone’s life.The whole philosophy of incarceration should be to use that opportunity of in-custody time to allow people to change their lives."If [governments] want to reduce crime and protect the public, I would recommend that we take rehabilitation seriously. When we incarcerate people, we are not only punishing the individuals that are deprived of liberty, we are also punishing their families, and society as a whole. Beyond the devastating effects that incarceration has on the incarcerated, the experience of incarceration has collateral, far-reaching consequences on communities. I would say that as a result of merely punishing and segregating people from society, in the long run societies are punished far more than they could everpunish their criminals.”I am a corrections analyst, planner and researcher with an extensive education and background as a penologist and criminologist. I'm an authority on correctional matters with a deep understanding of correctional facility operations, functional and architectural programming. I have participated in multiple correctional projects, both domestically and abroad, contributing to the process of correctional systems reform by providing State and local governments with sustainable, long-lasting, best practice criminal justice solutions and right-sized correctional infrastructure.My career in both academia and practical consulting in the field of corrections have nurtured and refined my analytical skills, which are critical for criminal justice strategic planning. Areas of expertise: comparative prison systems; alternatives to incarceration; inmate population data collection and analysis; systemic needs assessments; master planning, justice facilities planning and programming of new secure institutions; modern prison operations, programmatic needs and facility/infrastructure improvements. I'm a member of the International Corrections and Prison Association's (ICPA) Board of Directors and Co-chair of the Planning and Design Committee and have an on-going collaboration with the Interamerican Development Bank, the UN Friends of Corrections, and Prison Reform International on issues related to the humanization and improvement of prison conditions.
