From 1994 to 1998, he completed two post-docs in the field of drug delivery, first at the bioengineering department of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, USA, and then at the pharmaceutical institute of the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. In 1998, he joined RMS Foundation in Bettlach, Switzerland to design and study resorbable biomaterials and bone substitutes. In 2003, Dr Bohner was given the responsability of a newly-created research group on „skeletal substitute materials“. This group was extended in Nov 2016 and renamed "Bioceramics & Biocompatibility". Since Oct 2023, he has been leading the research group of RMS Foundation. Dr Bohner joined the executive board in 2010. He acted as managing director at interim from Dec 2022 to May 2023.Dr Bohner is the inventor/co-inventor of «chronOS blocks», «chronOS Inject» and «cyclOS / CEROS Putty». He is the author of more than 130 peer reviewed articles (h = 56-65), 19 international patent applications. From 2004 to 2019, he was adjunct professor of the university of Sherbrooke (Canada). He is the past president of the Swiss Society for Biomaterials and GRIBOI, the past secretary (2013-2017) and treasurer (2017-2021) of the European Society for Biomaterials. He has been an editor since 2008 of Acta Biomaterialia, one of the leading journal in the field of biomaterials (IF = 10.6). He received in 2014 the "Racquel LeGeros Award" of the "International Society for Ceramics in Medicine" recognizing scientists with a large contribution to the field of bioceramics. In Oct 2016, he became research councillor of the Swiss National Research Foundation. He is the 2023 recipient of the George Winter Award of the European Society for Biomaterials. The George Winter award was established to recognize, encourage and stimulate outstanding research contributions to the field of biomaterials.Specialties: • synthesis of calcium phosphates, from nano- to milliparticles• design of calcium phosphates as granules, blocks, cements or pastes• improvement of present delivery techniques for bone substitutes • application of these materials, methods, and concepts in clinical applications• application of calcium phosphates as drug carriers
