On July 1, 2020, I became president of Skidmore College. I said it on day one and continue to today — it’s my dream job and it’s an honor to be part of such a prestigious institution’s present and future. Prior to Skidmore, I served as provost and chief academic officer at Washington and Lee. In my career, I have spent over 25 years at great liberal arts colleges — the model for higher education in which I so firmly believe and one that has never been more exciting, challenging, or necessary. And Skidmore does this education better than and different from nearly every other liberal arts college I know. As president of Skidmore, I’m pleased to be leading the community through several priorities, including our Racial Justice Initiative and our ambitious Campus Master Planning process. But beyond that, my highest commitment is to the talented people that help this great College succeed. Together, we’re building a community of trust, something that stands for me alongside our philosophy that Creative Thought Matters — twin assertions that define a place where everybody feels they can thrive. My early and continuing specialty is in English literature. I publish frequently on modern American, African American, and Irish Literature. Some of my recent works include “Screening Modern Irish Fiction and Drama,” “The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison,” and three lecture series for The Great Courses on Shakespeare and on Irish Literature.Looking to get in touch?
