I am a qualified Accountant Acca working as FC/FD. I enjoy working at SMEs usually about 50 staff and T/O around 15 million. This suits me as I like to role my sleeves up and get fully involved in many aspects of the business. I believe that even though you may be an employee and not own any shares in a company if you treat it as if you own it then you will do the best job you can. I have been described as not a "Normal" accountant. I am not sure what that means. I believe an FD needs to be made of of more than just the numbers and reports, balances and margins. To be great you need to have a foot in Sales, a foot in Marketing and various limbs in different sections of the business. I did not start out as Academic as I am now. In fact I left school at 18 to work in Engineering in a Factory. I completed an Apprenticeship in Manufacturing! 5 years later I decided id taken a wrong turn so went back to education to complete a Maths Degree and then AAT and then ACCA. I now believe that this is a slightly odd route to Finance Director however it has been a huge asset to my personality and experience in working at various companies. You do not really understand each level of the business unless you have spent time in that area seeing the good and the bad. I am now older and wiser but still driven as I have always been. I enjoy a challenge, I have to be busy. I like to set my goals high and do a good job.
