Led the global technology organization for a mid-stage internal startup/scale-up e-commerce business within Cimpress (~$50M annual revenue), through a period of market challenges and organizational change. Responsible for the technology strategy and solutions Cimpress uses to serve customers and partner organizations with at least 10 employees.

As a Senior Technologist in Cimpress Technology, worked to influence design thinking, manage/mentor/coach team leads, and help solve tricky problems that touch on multiple areas of Cimpress's business. Focused on Logistics Technology, designing and building the systems that get Cimpress products into the hands of customers around the world.

Site Lead for Cimpress Technology's new location in Prague, during a fixed one-year expat assignment.• Worked with cross-functional teams to select the new office location and establish the office. Advocated for and implemented an agile/entrepreneurial approach to growing the office.• Worked with Recruiting and HR to attract talent, trained and developed interviewing teams, made hiring decisions.• As Squad Lead, built and led an agile team of four software developers working on cloud-based micro-services in the area of manufacturing logistics operations. Managed team members toward autonomy and empowerment using intent-based leadership strategies. Promoted one team member to Squad Lead, and continued to manage/mentor him in that role.• Managed and mentored the Squad Leads of two additional agile teams, and served as on-site domain expert and technical resource for their teams.• Set culture and created an atmosphere of positive collaboration within the office and across locations. Worked with HR, Payroll, Real Estate, Facilities, Finance, Travel, and Benefits teams to decide approach and policies and to resolve critical issues. Provided/coordinated on-site operational support in all of these areas.• Grew the Prague office to 18 people in the first year, including three autonomous agile software teams, as well as an analytics team and an on-site product owner.

Developed manufacturing software for Vistaprint and Cimpress Technology in the area of Logistics Technology, as an individual contributor, team lead, and career manager.• Worked closely with product owners across the company, and with business stakeholders at many different manufacturing facilities around the world, to build logistics operations and optimization tools that meet business needs and influence business strategy.• As Squad Lead, led the conception, design, and construction of the Cimpress Shipping API during the first year of its life. Collaborated with project manager/product owner to create a long-term vision, then built toward that vision in a series of increments that satisfied short-term business goals while helping ratify/refine the team's approach.• Led the team through a transformation from manually-tested monolithic code, native Windows applications, and slow-moving monolithic deployment, to a heterogeneous continuously-deployed cloud micro-service architecture.• Earned two promotions: to Senior Lead Software Engineer, and then to Principal Software Engineer

Under contract to a family business, designed and built a full-stack web application to manage and run scholastic wrestling tournaments, replacing a legacy implementation; the new system enabled the business to scale into new regions and markets

(Full- and part-time.) At an early-stage startup, developed several iterations of a mobile-phone-based peer-to-peer messaging and file-sharing application, using Symbian C++ and J2ME MIDP-2. Designed and built robust, optimized, thread-safe utility and compatibility libraries for resource-constrained devices. Implemented scalable tools for building, packaging, and releasing mobile applications for multiple mobile platforms. Designed and built a web-based server control console.

Created voice user interfaces and core components of a voice-controlled personal assistant targeted at mobile phone carriers. As an internal expert on the product, advised voice UI designers, testers, integration engineers, and other developers on the internal workings of every component of the system. Supported the delivery of the product to a major US mobile carrier.

Developed and taught courses in computer science and computer engineering to undergraduates. Also taught courses in C and Unix shell programming to employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Clarksburg, WV.
