Growing up, I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors. It was wild, untamed and full of adversities. However, there were also opportunities in those adversities. This passion for the outdoors as well as nurturing youths who I believe are the future of the world and my inquisitive nature eventually led to me starting my own Outdoor Adventure Education company, SD Adventures, where I crafted and delivered programmes for youths in as well as through, MOE schools, in Singapore and overseas. My focus at the time was teaching how we manage the challenges faced in the untamed outdoors when we live in such a structured world.Working with MOE schools soon introduced me to the service-learning industry after requests for community-service programmes and what I observed was that lots of these participants do not understand the concept and context of what service learning is about. It was not just about self-praise or the feeling of self-satisfaction by doing something good or even what benefits you provide to the people you are helping. It’s about what you learn about yourself at the end of the day. It’s about your own self-awareness. It’s about your WHY.The key element in doing something is WHY you are doing something.This realization sent me on a journey of self-discovery about WHY I’m doing what I’m doing. I enrolled in courses and expanded my knowledge through training and reading a copious amount of books. After all, without being trained, you won’t be self-aware about what you’re missing and what needs to be done. In doing so, I discovered my calling and became a trainer and life coach.And in all these years, my passion for the outdoors and teaching youths as well as my inquisitive nature has continued to drive me forward into creating various programmes for youths and for corporate companies from school camps, service-learning programmes, company retreats, corporate teambuilding and workshops. More recently, it has led to the creation of ONE Project with the aim of providing a platform for youths to showcase and actualize their ideas to create a better future for the world ahead.
