About Marc Galland

A fully trained Plant Scientist with growing Genomics & Data Science know-how. My passion to combine plant & data grew along the years. In France, my first research experiences gave me a strong background in plant molecular biology, omics analyses and collaboration with industry. After moving to the Netherlands, I acquired a strong bioinformatic practical experience in plant genomics at the University of Amsterdam. In parallel, I also support fellow researchers on genomics and data science by leading a local community of practice in computational biology (www.scienceparkstudygroup.info). Between May 2021 and 2023, I was part of the University of Amsterdam recently created Data Science Center, acting as the liaison between the Study Group and the Data Science Center as well as organising code-related activities. Since September 2023, I am working as a Plant Researcher ("Chargé de Recherches") at INRAE Le Rheu (next to Rennes in Bretagne) on legume - aphid interaction. My aim is to understand the resistance of pea (Pisum sativum) and faba bean (Vicia faba) to aphids using a combination of plant genetics, specific aphid host races, plant omics together with AI techniques to find suitable gene and small molecule candidates.

I am searching for new sources of genetic and molecular resistance factors in legume species (pea, faba bean) to different aphid pests. Using a comparative approach that make use of specialised and generalist aphid, I investigate the commonalities and specificities of plant resistance and defence responses. I use a combination of 'omics' approaches as well as the rich genetic germplasm collection available within INRAE to discover new souces of resistance in order to increase the agricultural share of legume crops as a way towards more sustainable food production. As these species can be grown in lieu of imported soybean, it will also contribute to the fight against deforestation in South America and possibly increase European alimentation sovereinty.
