Conceived and developed Silicon Lightweight Mirrors (SLMS™) technology for lightweight, athermal optics applications from the Extreme UV to FAR IR with Dr. William Goodman. Developed optical mounting technology for SLMS™ using a proprietary bond and engineered Cesic material. Leads Schafer’s effort to cryogenically test SLMS™ and Cesic mounts at NASA/MSFC XRCF facility. Results demonstrated that SLMS™ technology is the most dimensionally stable mirror technology that has ever been tested at 27 Kelvin. Developed, with Dr. Goodman, two other product lines that are based on SLMS™ technology: LASIT™ (Lightweight Athermal SLMS Innovative Telescopes) and CHORD™ (Communication Hybrid Optical RF Dish). CHORD™ (Communication Hybrid Optical RF Dish). Provided senior level technical support to LWOS team and establishes partnering relations with optics systems houses and vendors for lightweight optical materials and instruments to manufacture products such as telescopes, imagers, fast steering mirrors and optics for high-energy lasers. Responsible for writing all component and system requirements and verification procedures for LWOS programs. Identified government and commercial opportunities and procurements for LWOS technologies and establishes technology advocates within these organizations. Contributed technically in the proposal-writing efforts for these opportunities and procurements. Acted most often as Chief Scientist and occasionally as Principal Investigator for these programs in event of awards.

Senior Scientist on a proprietary program (SETA support) from January 2002 to May 2003.Responsible for writing requirements, verification procedures and detailed plans. Senior Scientist on the Space Based Laser program (SETA support) from Sept 1996 to Dec 2002Assisted in the planning, setup and execution of low and high power experiments at TRW’s Capistrano Test Site (CTS). Designed, wrote requirements and verification procedures, and implemented a video based diagnostic that enabled monitoring and control of the LAMP primary mirror segment-to-segment tilt. Responsible for the design, procurement, assembly and verification of the Beam Alignment and Stabilization Subsystem. Provided technical advice for improvement of the wavefront sampling, beam control, optical, electro-optical, sensor, laser and beam director subsystems for the SBL Integrated Flight Experiment (IFX) as a member of the Beam Director Element (BDE) IPT. Responsible for creating and maintaining the BDE risks on the risk management database, presentations of BDE risk status to the BDE IPT and IFX program management, and lead planner for the optical test bed and coating risk reduction tasks as the BDE representative and focal point for the IFX risk management working group. Made significant technical contributions in the optical areas of High Energy Laser (HEL) beam enclosed energy diameter, Low Energy Laser (LEL) geometric footprint, jitter and wavefront, alignment laser boresight to the HEL, alignment laser wavefront, Inertial Reference Unit (IRU), BDE translation sensor and BCE calibration wavefront sensor requirements for the BDE-BDE interface working group. Also, analyzed the effects of the divergence, rotation and static tilt of the HEL at the Laser Power Element (LPE)-BCE interface that drove the BDE-BCE requirements for clipper dimensions and telescope magnification. Responsible for creating and maintaining the error trees.

For the Frequecy Addding Media (FAME) program created a laboratory, acquired capital equipment and performed proof-of-principle experiments on enhanced off-resonance pumping of gaseous laser media. Patented concept was verified with world record gains in the infrared and lasing in the ultraviolet. For the PYRO proprietary program created a laboratory, acquired capital equipment and performed visible and infrared radiometry on rocket plumes and flares.

Responsible for system engineering and production of two state-of-the-art Digital Heterodyne Interferometers (DHI). The responsibility included writing component and system requirements and verification procedures. $1M project was completed under budget and four months ahead of schedule. Created a laboratory and acquired capital equipment to study feasibility of a number of short wavelength chemical laser concepts.Performed proof-of-principle experiments to verify ring resonator concept using an argon ion laser medium. Supported DHI used for device verification flow testing. Responsibilities included computer programming of data reduction and acquisition code, parts procurement, component assembly and system testing.
