About Marc Smith

Experienced government relations professional with over 25 years working in government and non profit sectors. As National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Policy Director, I direct NWF’s Great Lakes water and wildlife conservation programs based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have testified on a wide range of Great Lakes, wildlife and conservation issues before the U.S. House of Representatives, Michigan and Ohio Legislature, and other state and federal agencies. In March of 2019, I was appointed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to serve as a Commissioner on the Great Lakes Commission. For over 16 years I was responsible for managing NWF’s partnerships and building strong conservation networks with its state affiliates in the Great Lakes region. Before serving as policy director, I directed NWF’s public lands program in the Washington, D.C. office. Before joining NWF in 2001, I worked for two Members of Congress in Washington, D.C. Serving as Senior Legislative Assistant for the late Congressman Bruce F. Vento for over four years, I handled the Congressman's Natural Resources Committee responsibilities and other legislative priorities. I also worked for former Congressman Robert A. Underwood as Senior Legislative Assistant focusing on environmental cleanup and military land management issues. I received my B.A. in History from West Virginia University.My best accomplishment is being the proud father of a daughter and son. I spend most of my free-time enjoying the Great Lakes with my family, fly-fishing, and coaching soccer.
