Collaborated with Professor Richard Borowsky of New York University to conduct research on the evolution as well as the genetics of cavefish with emphasis on understanding the molecular and developmental bases of adaptation and the “eyeless” condition. Sequenced several genes in order to isolate mutations that arose in the cavefish, and then using bioinformatics programs, compared the sequenced genes to surface fish to determine what led to the mutation and eventually evolution of this specific trait. Various laboratory techniques were used to sequence these genes such as; polymerase chain reactions, gel electrophoresis, DNA assays, ENSEMBL, BLASTN, and other procedures to ensure adequate results.
