CONTEXT: Fixed term contract.LOCATION: Institut interdisciplinaire d'innovation technologique (3IT) - Affiliated to the Université de Sherbrooke, the 3IT is a nanotech research ecosystem that is part of an International Joint Unit (UMI-LN2, or Unité mixte internationale LN2) of the CNRS.SUMMARY: Funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR, or Agence nationale de la recherche), the MISTIC project was aimed to develop a microscale heat engine cluster. Using a Stirling cycle powered exclusively by waste heat, these clusters would be capable of harvesting typically discharged industrial low temperature waste heat (LTWH) for cogeneration.RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordination of a Canada-France consortium, comprising the Université de Sherbrooke's 3IT (Canada), two FEMTO-ST research labs (France) and the Université de Savoy Mont-Blanc (France), and the creation of a proof-of-concept prototype of the technology.State of the art R&D was used to that end;-Advanced analyses were used to model the coupled physics of the engine cycle, finding answers beyond the state of the art.-Empirical research was concurrently used as to further enhance the models or to circumvent overly complex (non-deterministic) analytical problems.-Technological capabilities, in the context of micromachine engineering, were further developed through these empirical endeavors.
