The HSMT scholarship provides recipients with the opportunity to participate in several Island biodiversity surveys as part of a team of specialist scientists. As part of this expert team, Marc took part in surveying five of Tasmania’s offshore islands targeting an array of biota including marsupials, bats, reptiles, seabirds, insects, and highly endangered plant life. Specialist techniques and use of tools for the monitoring of the above listed biota were all learnt; camera trapping, live trapping, animal handling , genetic sampling, morphometric measurements, gender identification, harp netting, vocal recording bats, transecting rookeries for seabird density estimation, identification of active seabird burrows, and plant identification.
