Originally part of Ascend before the merger in 1999, then became part of Inter-Networking Systems (INS) division of Lucent. Specialized in SBC's deployment of Max TNTs/6000 and CBX500s/GX550s Frame Relay/ATM switches.Our biggest success was in selling $800 million in 1999 to SBC for "Project Lightspeed." We successfully competed against Newbridge (who was the incumbent at legacy SBC) and others for this key business. It was the largest sale of ATM switches ever for Ascend/Lucent. Unfortunately, this meant that our quota went to $1.1 Billion (yes, with a B) the next year, which is why most of the team had to leave.

Hired as a subject-matter expert on DSL. Pulsecom produced one of the first ADSL modems based on DMT (the eventual standard). My role was to work with the Pulsecom sales group to evangelize DMT and our xDSL products (IDSL, SDSL, ADSL). Pulsecom's DSLAM model was also very forward-thinking in that it was based on IP over ethernet, rather than ATM. Pulsecom also utilized PPPoE and L2TP when everyone else was doing bridged-ethernet.We were responsible for several successful trials and deployments around the world. This led to the sale of this division to ECI Telecom later after I left to pursue other interests.As a side note, in my many trips to Asia for Pulsecom, I bought my first digital camera in Hong Kong in 1997. It was a 1 megapixel Olympus for around $1300!

The World's largest information service (then) ran on a giant private network of X.25/X.75 AT FIRST and then frame relay later. I worked in the CompuServe Network Services division, which was spun out to MCI/UUnet after the AOL purchase of CompuServe in 1997.I had several promotions throughout my years there. In my final two years, I had primary sales responsibility for several existing accounts - American Airlines, Phillips Petroleum, Texas Instruments, Foxmeyer - out of the Dallas sales office. I grew the territory from $3.3 to $4.5 million. We successfully competed against IBM, UUnet, SprintNet, BT, Wiltel, MCI and AT&T for managed frame relay and dialup networking (remember dialup?!?). We would sell a 56K frame relay circuit for $2400/month and this SAVED companies money [compared to point-to-point dedicated circuits]!
