About Marc Davis

Over the past decade, Marc Davis has been looking 50 years ahead, researching and developing a series of books about how we can invent a better future for us all. This year, he is the debut author of "Vincent on Mars" and the "Vincent on Mars: Illustrated Glossary", as well as "William on Mars" from Artists on Planets.Marc also invents mobile, social, media, and personal data technologies that connect people, the web, and the world. With an over thirty year career of technology research and development spanning the MIT Media Lab, Interval Research, UC Berkeley, Yahoo!, Invention Arts, and Microsoft, he has done pioneering work in knowledge representation, metadata, video systems, context-aware computing, computer vision, mobile platforms and applications, social media, social search, mobile and social advertising, and personal data technologies and applications. He has transformed his ideas into over 240 granted patents, as well as numerous research prototypes, products, and publications.At the MIT Media Lab, Marc co-founded the Narrative Intelligence Reading Group, which was recognized by the National Academy of Sciences as one of its key “promising areas for transdisciplinary work.” In 1997, he authored the invited article, “Garage Cinema and the Future of Media Technology” for the Special Issue on “The Next 50 Years” for the Communications of the ACM, which is of special relevance today.Marc was an Assistant Professor at the UC Berkeley School of Information. Marc co-founded the Berkeley Center for New Media, and directed Garage Cinema Research, where he pioneered context-aware mobile media tagging, sharing, and face recognition. Marc worked on the technical, legal, and business foundations for our digital society and economy, so we can all benefit from having the right and ability to control the uses of our personal data. Marc articulated that we live in an age of “digital feudalism” that needs to be transformed by a “digital enlightenment.” Central to this effort was his work as a key member of the World Economic Forum’s Rethinking Personal Data Project and on the Global Agenda Council for Data-Driven Development. Marc was featured in the Global Agenda Outlook 2013. At Microsoft, Marc worked on the vision and technology strategy for the Online Services Division. He helped transform social search by envisioning Bing as moving from the “Web of Pages” to the “Web of People” and the "Web of the World". Marc’s work has been featured in the New York Times, San Jose Mercury News, Atlantic Monthly, BBC News, and many other leading publications.
