I handle "Fire and Emergency Medical Services" (EMS) apparatus and equipment, and medical care at an emergency medical care technician level while performing fire-suppression activities, conducts pre-emergency analysis, maintains equipment and grounds, performs public education in fire prevention.

I was assigned to a specialized section called the Young Men Emerging (YME) unit. The YME unit is quite unique in correctional environments because the focus is on rehabilitation not the traditional punitive process. As a Correctional Officer in the YME unit, I had to be observant and vigilant while maintaining a high level of empathy and awareness. I often relied on cognitive intervention methods to ensure the residents were not making decisions that would have a negative impact on their futures. I was responsible for the monitoring of homework assignments and reviewing the chores sheet outlining resident unit duties. As part of my role, I conducted daily group sessions and individual conferences to ensure residents were meeting the goals and expectations as prescribed by the unit. When some students would demonstrate their resistance to comply with these instructions, I would rely on behavioral or cognitive methods in my attempt to guide them through their thought process. I always taught the residents to examine their own thoughts and emotions, recognize when negative thoughts and emotions are escalating and then use strategies to change their thinking and behavior. Every week, I held group meetings where we would explore behavioral and cognitive interventions by dialoguing about things such as the future, goal setting, and their plans on how they would attain these goals once released from jail.

As a Correctional Officers I enforced the regulations governing the operation of the facility, serving as both a supervisor and counselor of inmates. During emergencies or other periods of heavy workload or limited staff, I was required to work long and irregular hours, unusual shifts, Sundays, holidays and unexpected overtime.

Participate in athletic events and competitive sports, according to established rules and regulations. Receive instructions from coaches and other sports staff prior to events and discuss their performance afterwards. I also served as team captain while playing.
