About Marcel Goldschen-Ohm
I am an Assistant Professor in the department of Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Austin. I study the biophysics of proteins involved in cellular signaling at the level of single molecules using optical, electrical and computational methods. Recently, I have developed optical methods that combine nanophotonic zero-mode waveguide devices and FRET to directly image single-molecule binding reactions at 100-fold higher concentrations than previously possible. This work has major implications for understanding processes driven or modulated by association with both endogenous compounds and therapeutic drugs. I have also developed several major pieces of software for scientific use (see Projects and GitHub link).

I was also invited to author a chapter in the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. For my studies of sodium channel voltage gating, I received a fellowship from the American Heart Association.

I used a variety of electrophysiology, single molecules, and rapid solution exchange techniques to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying function and drug modulation of GABAA receptors. For my studies on human epilepsy related mutations and their connection to drug modulation by benzodiazepines, I received a fellowship from the Epilepsy Society.
