Profile bio

About Marcel Goldschen-Ohm

I am an Assistant Professor in the department of Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Austin. I study the biophysics of proteins involved in cellular signaling at the level of single molecules using optical, electrical and computational methods. Recently, I have developed optical methods that combine nanophotonic zero-mode waveguide devices and FRET to directly image single-molecule binding reactions at 100-fold higher concentrations than previously possible. This work has major implications for understanding processes driven or modulated by association with both endogenous compounds and therapeutic drugs. I have also developed several major pieces of software for scientific use (see Projects and GitHub link).

Listed skills include Single Molecule Imaging, Software Development, Biophysics, Ion Channels, and 25 others.

Assistant Scientist

Madison, Wisconsin Area

Research in single-molecule fluorescence biophysics in the lab of Dr. Baron Chanda. Publications in major peer reviewed journals such as eLife and Angewandte Chemie International Edition. For my advances in the field, I was an invited speaker at two Gordon Research Conferences.

Sep 2015 - Sep 2017

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Madison, Wisconsin Area

Research in ion channel biophysics in the lab of Dr. Baron Chanda. I used electrophysiology, single molecules, and fluorescent probes to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying voltage-gated ion channel function and ligand/drug modulation. Publications in major peer reviewed journals such as Nature Molecular & Structural Biology, Nature Communications and The Journal of General Physiology. I was also invited to author a chapter in the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. For my studies of sodium channel voltage gating, I received a fellowship from the American Heart Association.

Sep 2009 - Aug 2015

Graduate Research Assistant

Madison, Wisconsin Area

Research in ion channel biophysics in the lab of Dr. Mathew V. Jones. I used a variety of electrophysiology, single molecules, and rapid solution exchange techniques to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying function and drug modulation of GABAA receptors. For my studies on human epilepsy related mutations and their connection to drug modulation by benzodiazepines, I received a fellowship from the Epilepsy Society.
