Trained in building physics and building services, but with a clear interest in the closely related research fields, here at the Eindhoven University of Technology my research and teaching activities are directed to the application of the performance based building approach and use of sustainable energy in the built environment, all with a focus on the indoor environment. Originally the performance assessment related more to simulation (CFD) and experimental work. With energy use of building always in close sight, the current focus also lies in the further exploration of the (long-term) in-use indoor environment performance through objective evaluation (measurements) and its perception by its users (subjective and objective). This knowledge should help us to enable the development of real healthy buildings and in the end serve the individual building user better! At the same time the performance approach also allows us to come up with product innovations! There is still a lot to be gained... In line with this interest and activities I was proud to be president of the successful international Healthy Buildings 2015 Europe conference (http://hb2015-europe.org/), which I recently organized on behalf of ISIAQ and ISIAQ.nl together with a perfect team!I tried to write down my drive for my current and future work in a reflection which you can find in the pdf. Please feel free to contact me and discuss about this!

Associate ProfessorEindhoven University Of Technology Oct 2023 - PresentEindhoven, North Brabant, NetherlandsIndoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) performance is the starting point for all work/research done at our group at TU/e. We do this through experimental and numerical methods. We build buildings for people, their activities and processes, so the importance of good IEQ is clear. However, on the one hand we don't (fully) apply what we know, and on the other hand there are many aspects that need more knowledge. The interesting part is the connection of IEQ with other disciplines such as engineering/energy, psychology, physiology, medicine, material science, ..... In my work I try to be active in this connection. A clear example where everything is coming together at the moment is all the work on air quality and pathogens as a result of the COVID experience. -
Assistant ProfessorEindhoven University Of Technology May 2006 - Nov 2023Eindhoven Area, NetherlandsAfter returning to Eindhoven University of Technology my interests related to the practical application of the CFD technique in combination with the application of the performance based building approach and sustainable energy in the built environment, all with a focus on the indoor environment. Currently it is the performance gap that we still find in buildings (energy and indoor environment) and the increased awareness of a good indoor environment that intrigues me. The above translates into the passion to improve human well being in a sustainable world applying the performance based approach. -
Immediate Past PresidentInternational Society Of Indoor Air Quality And Climate - Isiaq (Www.Isiaq.Org) Jul 2018 - Jul 2019Herndon, Va, Usa (Isiaq Secretariat)After serving two years as president of ISIAQ at the Indoor Air 2018 conference in Philadelphia I handed-over my presidency to Marzenna Dudzinska. In the next year I will try to help her with the experience gained over the last two years. I enjoyed the two years a lot and together with the board and the secretariat we were able to make some good steps in the further development of ISIAQ. From July 2019 the new President-Elect (Corinne Mandin) will take over. Of course I will be available as back-up and I will keep on stressing the importance of the indoor environment for health and comfort!

PresidentInternational Society Of Indoor Air Quality And Climate - Isiaq (Www.Isiaq.Org) Jul 2016 - Jul 2018Herndon, Va, Usa (Isiaq Secretariat)Together with the board, I aim to serve ISIAQ in reaching its intentions (see below). This includes support in the organization of conferences, supporting technical committees, chapters, student activities etc. I really enjoy working in this truly multidisciplinary and international team! From our website (www.isiaq.org): ISIAQ is an international, independent, multidisciplinary, scientific, non-profit organization whose purpose is to support the creation of healthy, comfortable and productive indoor environments. We strongly believe this is achievable by advancing the science and technology of indoor air quality and climate as it relates to indoor environmental design, construction, operation and maintenance, air quality measurement and health sciences.

Scientific ResearcherTno Oct 1998 - Apr 2006Delft Area, NetherlandsAfter my PhD I continued my work at the Dutch Applied Research Institute TNO in Delft. In my first years at TNO I was given the opportunity to extend my area of interest to the topic of sustainable energy by participating in national and international research projects in this area. After a few years I returned to the indoor environment area. Also here I was able to participate in a lot of very interesting national and international projects. Also many practical indoor environmental flow problems related to offices, operating theatre, air plane and industrial halls were dealt with. If simulation was involved, in all cases a comparison with measurements was strived for. In the last part of my work at TNO I became subtask leader of the EU 5th FW Thematic Network PeBBu. where I lead the subtask on the application of the performance based building approach with respect to the indoor environment. Here my interest in the Performance Based Building approach was reconfirmed! -
Phd-ResearcherEindhoven University Of Technology Sep 1994 - Sep 1998Eindhoven Area, NetherlandsI graduated from TU/e in 1994 as Master of Science in Building Engineering on a thesis focusing at natural convection from large surfaces (downdraught) applying measurements and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. Following this experience, I continued my research as a PhD-student in the same direction, but with a wider view on the assessment of air flow characteristics in the indoor environment. My thesis "Measurement and Simulation of indoor air flow" was the outcome of that, but merely presented a start on my quest to balance the possibilities and limitations of performance assessment procedures to assess building physical performance indicators in design and practice, mostly directed at the indoor environment. In my PhD-work I focused at air flow measurement techniques and measurements in a full-scale climate chamber model for displacement ventilation. These measurement results were used to validate a CFD-model of the configuration. With that information it became possible to assess an innovative personal ventilation system.
