Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Africa (Pty) Ltd (MHPSA), formerly Hitachi Power Africa (HPA), for the Medupi and Kusile boiler packages comprising 12 units of about 800 megawatt electrical (MWe) each (6 x 800 MW boilers on each project). MRPE is responsible for the supply, fabrication and erection of all the structural steel, ducting and bunkers for the boiler structure and auxiliary bay, as well as the installation of the complete boiler units and mechanical installations on both Medupi and Kusile Power Stations.These two power plants represent almost 25% of the current Eskom’s generating capacity and are the largest projects in South Africa, the largest coal-fired steam generator projects in Africa and the largest air cooled power plants in the world. More than half a million tonnes of steel will be installed on the two projects, which has not been done anywhere in the world within such a tight time frame as has been set for these projects. The construction period for one of the boilers at Medupi was set to take 17 months with subsequent boilers starting in 6 month intervals, except for the first four boilers at Kusile which start at 7 month intervals. As the boilers are completed, they will be commissioned and put into operation for the generation of the much needed electricity in the country.

Client: BHP BillitonScope: Construction of slurry dams on Middelburg Mine South.Roles & Responsibilities• Assist with monthly scheduled audits on sub-contractors to monitor, measure and report on legal non-compliance.• Management of Incident scenes, from gathering evidence right through until close out of findings. • Conducting a detailed Root Cause Analysis in the event of an incident, in order to accurate identify associated Root Causes for effective management and prevention.• Assist management and production team in proactive risk identification and assisting in drafting safe, cost effective solutions in terms of roadblocks identified.• Liaise with Mitsubishi Hitachi / KET HSE on site.• Tracking of daily deviation trends in order to identify key focus points.• Conducting daily site inspections to identify any shortcomings, positive actions/conditions and non-compliances.• Assisting with the review and effectiveness of Method statements and risk assessments.• Monitoring of contractor compliance with legal requirements and site specific HSE plans, policies and procedures.• Implement, maintain and communicate a strong HSE culture both internally and also on site.• Assist in cause analysis and incident investigations, and communicating lessons learned and best practice to all concerned parties.• Engage in team meetings with internal management staff, the appointed contractors and the Client (HPA).• Liaise with onsite supervisors and foreman regarding unsafe conditions or acts observed and working together for effective rectification and close out.• Conduct onsite training and awareness where the need is identified.
