In géén land ter wereld is de strijd tegen het water zo eeuwenoud als in Nederland. Een groot deel van Nederland ligt beneden zeeniveau.Men begon al vroeg met het aanleggen van dijken. Na de aanleg van de Zeedijk werd Amsterdam niet langer geteisterd door talloze overstromingen. Amsterdam kon zich hierna ontwikkelen tot een belangrijke haven- en handelsstad.Het unieke recept dateert van 1867 en is bij archeologische opgravingen op de Zeedijk te Amsterdam, ontdekt in ’t Aepjen. In den Aepjen (In 't Aepjen), Zeedijk 1, AmsterdamVanwaar in den Aepjen?Het volk dat rond die tijd de stad bezocht waren veelal zeelui die vele maanden op zee waren geweest om handel te halen en te brengen. Zij dronken, aten en sliepen in herbergen direct aan de waterlijn.Schippers en zeelui die hun rekening niet konden betalen beloofden de uitbaters van de herbergen een volgende keer dieren mee te brengen. Met name de aapjes waren zeer in trek. De eigenaar van één van die herbergen doopte zijn etablissement om tot "In den Aepjen", omdat hij erg veel klanten had die met een aapje betaalden. Deze zaten in kooien om de bezoekers te vermaken. Omdat deze beesten veel vlooien hadden die op mensen oversprongen, krabden de gasten zich een ongeluk.Op een gegeven moment werd het "krabben" gekoppeld aan "je zult wel in In den Aepjen hebben gelogeerd". De uitdrukking 'in de aap gelogeerd' komt hier vandaan. Het betekent in feite "je hebt ongeluk".De herbergier kon niet anders dan de aapjes van de hand doen. Hij had een vriend met een grote tuin in de Plantage buurt in Amsterdam. Die de dieren graag van hem over nam in 1838, later zou deze tuin uitgroeien tot wat we nu kennen als Dierentuin Artis. In 't Aepjen heet nog steeds zo. Het heeft wonder boven wonder meerdere stadsbranden weten te overleven, dus wie weet brengt deze bedevaartplaats u geluk.
